We bought some strawberries from Lidl today. Delicious, nice and ripe. Thanks for the tip.

Maybe Max is because they are not that good, bland almost and tasteless, if you get the chance when they are in season try some British Strawberries, now they do taste good. Also, those the wife purchased from Lidl's went bad within a day and were binned.

Sorry, do not feel the need to buy more of them.

You are touchy Max, a very unnecessary comment by you.

I am no gourmet Max but I know for sure that those Lidls berries are bland and very tasteless, they look OK, and I am not on my own with this opinion, my thoughts are, give those British strawberries a try when they are in season, about Wimbledon tennis time. Are we allowed an opinion?

I think Lidls fruit and veg is second rate, and we avoid buying from them, but recently we bought a pack of four Pink lady apples, they looked OK but were rotten and binned, also bought strawberry's from them and they went in the bin too after a day.

Best strawberries in order of preference for me:
1. British
2. Cyprus
3. Israel

I won't buy or eat Spanish strawberries as they're always a disappointment.

Did our shopping early this morning at AlphaMega. Their strawberries had gone up to €2.25 per 500 grammes. After our last experience with them, going mouldy within a day,we called in at the ex Muckhtar's shop in Mandria and bought a punnet of lovely, not oversized strawberries at €1.99 per 500 grammes. A 74 cent increase from the beginning of the week. No doubt they will be down to €1.25 next week.

Lidl have more than one source for their strawberries. It is perfectly possible that one source is nice while the other isn't, so thank you Max, for pointing out something nice.

There is no doubts that Lidl has more than one supplier for all their shops. The one of my pic was from "Farmers Fresh" company which is one of the largest in Cyprus and heavy also on export. I bought many times other fruits or vegis from this company and they were mainly good quality and controlled by Lidl's staff for their freshness every early morning. To have a contract with Lidl means a lot for Cypriot suppliers and they don't want to loose that contract!! But I will restrain in future from recommending fresh products when it leads only to arguments here...

I wouldn't let people arguing put you off. Some people will argue about anything.

Max, your recommendations are appreciated. We are still eating the cheddar cheese you recommended in February. We have also enjoyed the honeydew melons that Lidl have been selling, that are much superior in taste to anything sold in the UK. Like Hudswell, our main shops now are Alpha Mega and Lidl, plus the Mukhtar's Supermarket at Mandria, on the airport road. The butchery department there is excellent.

Hudswell wrote: Sat Apr 07, 2018 1:50 pm It's not arguments....it's opinion! And I do like the fruit and veg in salad in Lidl! Between Alpha Mega and Lidl that's our weekly shop...but I have no doubt that English Strawberies are the best in the world....believe it or not it's the climate! And this must be the first time ever...that me and Allesley actually agree 😃 Happy days....Happy Easter everyone. 🍓

What tide is that then? :D we should all get out more, but I agree it is the UK climate that makes UK strawberries so good.

Worrying news..... no news on which stores were supplied by these growers.

Not that worrying really:

"Head of the health services Alvertos Karis said last week that consuming strawberries contaminated with pesticides does not cause an immediate health problem. This, he said, occurs when someone consumes fruit or other foodstuff ridden with pesticides for a long period of time."

Nice to see the authorities on the ball.

What could be of concern in the future is... " Karis urged members of the public to avoid buying fruit and vegetables from street vendors as there is no way of knowing the production conditions. “We don’t know where they got them from, if pesticide was used, we don’t know if the produce was harvested at the right time or before the pesticides wore off,” Karis said. "

There are many roadside kiosks that sell strawberries and also independent 'traders' from the boots of cars, at bus stops in the summer months..

In my opinion it is important that one does NOT consume loads and loads from the same fruit like eating 1 kg of strawberries or when melon time is, a whole large water melon or plenty of grapes when in season, as there are still too many pesticides used from farmers without proper control... the same is with vegetables.

Yes its good to see the health services are checking up on producers, I just hope they have the man power to check more growers ..be it fruit or veg.
