Ah ok, so when you said "her citizens" you were referring to "these holidaymakers".

It just goes to show how important it is to be unambiguous when commenting on potentially contentious threads.

Don't know. I wondered that too. I can understand why the ROC would do such a thing, but I don't get what the significance of the EU is.

If France invaded Cornwall and took it over, I am sure the rest of the UK wouldn't like people landing in Bristol and crossing the border into Cornwall for a holiday, especially not the displaced Cornish forced to flee to Devon. But I am also sure that the UK would ban everybody from doing it, rather than just those outside of the EU.

I would imagine that if you have an EU passport Cyprus Immigration would not be able to detain you or ask for the purpose of your visit, as they HAVE to let you pass, unless you are on a stop list (say issued by europol etc), even if you are a criminal but not listed on the stop list.

If you are from outside the EU and declare your intention is to visit the North, they would deport you back. If they had declared their intention was to holiday in the South, there should not have been a problem.

They are holiday makers that happen to be Israeli citizens no?...as a big % of Israelis live in houses build on stolen Palestinian land, i doubt if they give two hoots about staying in stolen Cypriot hotels.

So, what proportion of Israelis are living in the illegal bits occupied in 1967?

Going round in circles now, Going back to the OP s question, I dont see a problem with the Republic stopping foreigners from staying in stolen Cypriot property...over and out.

I wont get involved in this, at this time, other than to say, anti-Israeli, is not anti-Semitic. Anti-Zionist, is not anti-Semitic.

I totally believe that Israel should exist. But the state is not beyond criticism, like any other state.

I'm not saying don't criticise a state. I am saying don't making sweeping generalisations. WHL's comment didn't add to the debate in any way, and was totally unnecessary.

But there's no point going on about it ad infinitum.

So you agree with me after all! "..all or none".
Incidentally my information is that the group who were deported were not told in advance by the Embassy they would not be allowed to enter the "north" to stay there overnight.
They were asked at the airport what was the purpose of their visit? They said what it was.
In any case why deport them, surely they should have been refused exit from the RoC at the border in that case?
Loads of people (non-EU) travel over to the "north" for overnight stays - so why not Israelis?

I think your find that the north is being promoted as a holiday destination in Israel, this is why the authorities here are tightening up on this...there were Serbians, and some other foreign nationals who were turned back so it wasn't just Israelis... It is a crossing point not a Border, only Turkey call it a border.

For WHL:
If they have also turned back some other nationals, why don't they turn back everyone, including EU nationals? Or don't they mind EU nationals and GCs staying in the hotels over there?
In fact in view of the breakdown in the re-unification talks, why don't they just close the crossing points?
(noted about crossing point not border).

Amos I agree with what you say, I really dont have an answer for you, I think they have more leverage on non EU Nationals rather then EU nationals who have a right to free travel within the EU..it should be interesting to see what happens after Brexit, if the same restrictions will apply to British nationals?

The North is classified as EU in respects of travel for EU citizens. That makes EU citizens and non-EU citizens different. IF, Israelis are treated different to other non-EU citizens, that is wrong.

I would actually stop any ‘tourist’ Cypriot or otherwise, crossing to the Casinos, if that’s against Cypriot law

Agree but, how do you know they are off to a casino, they could say they are visiting a church?

From today's Cyprus Mail

"Two Israeli men were arrested at Larnaca airport on Thursday in connection with assaulting and verbally abusing police officers.

The incident took place just before lunchtime in the transit hall. The men were due to depart for Israel after they were stopped from entering the republic.

Reports said the men were shouting in English and being rowdy.

Police officers tried to calm them down but they were allegedly assaulted by the suspects resulting in their arrest.

The reason for them being banned from entering was not immediately given but it could be related to a ban imposed by the republic on third-country nationals travelling to the occupied north of the island.

On Tuesday, some 40 Israelis were banned from entering after it transpired that they were going to be staying in the north."

That is ridiculous. Like I said in an earlier post some of the immigration officers at the airport need "re-training".
Some people will get upset when treated like that.
