Re: Receiving your pension in Cyprus

Post by Poppy »

Keving my income has been below the threshold since we came here in 2007 until last year when it just tipped over and I have always had to complete a tax return - silly I know but there you go, most especially when they are so far behind. We sold our property in 2013 so they had to assess all my returns to date then( after a lot of pressure from the Solicitor!) but I have not received any assessments since so they are at least 3 years behind if not more.
As I would have been liable to tax if I had stayed in the UK system I elected to be assessed here but my husband stayed in the UK system as per Austins wife as he was not liable for tax there

No I didn't, I didn't pay tax in the UK, and because my income wouldn't warrant tax, I didn't bother in Cyprus. I was told that they don't like zero returns.

Me too! We just renewed our medical card & the assistant checked our SI contributions which also show your earnings as well but never raised a query!

But once you have registered for tax here then you have to complete! I had to or I would have been paying tax in the UK!

This is what we were told at the Cyprus tax office...

How can you prove that you are below the limit if you don't provide a tax return ??

I suppose you wait until they ask, they never asked me.

Poppy would have been paying tax in the UK, presumably that's why she registered, but if you wouldn't have been paying in the UK, the UK tax office surely provides the Cypriot tax office with that info. when you leave the UK system.

I've been informed by my accountant that by law, everyone now needs to register for a TIC regardless of income. Previously it was only required if you reached the threshold. This is one of the measures to crack down on tax evasion. However, this was in relation to a question regarding working age persons so I am not 100% sure if this applies to retirees but will try to find out.
