This assumes that the UK and the EU agree and sign a legally binding Withdrawal Agreement without which there will be no Transition Period.

At the moment the talks are stuck primarily on the Irish Border. Something needs to give. Mrs May is still going on about a 'No Deal'.

And there may be no deal or Transition period, but being a half full type of guy I do not see Cyprus putting much, indeed anything into place that adversely effects those UK expats currently registered and resident in the country.

I think Cyprus will follow the rest of the EU, or do as its told by the EU.

Cyprus is a Sovereign state with strong historical ties with the UK, it will do what is best for the country.

It will do what the Masters Germany/France decide.

Also as stated by WHL, it will be a collective decision by the 27 members of the EU and not Cyprus on its own.

If the current system continues, individual countries within the EU will make 'local' agreements, however I do not believe that Cyprus being a member of the Commonwealth or having a large number of British Expats is a deciding factor that the UK should get preferential treatment. Looking at media coverage today it seems things are looking up and a deal may be 'in the offing' in the near future. As has been mentioned many times, residents should at least get the MEU1 form - after all they are currently 'illegal' if they have not already done so. That's my opinion!

But reading through the latest info released by the BHC recently, I saw that after the end of the transition period in 2020, any British resident who already has a Residents Permit will be able to exchange it for whatever the new form at the time is, with just basic iD, and at no extra charge. Those who only have registration certificates under this system will have to APPLY for residents statues under the new terms and pay for it.

No, as I understand it the MEU1 is a Registration ( with Immigration) Doc, it is the MEU3 which is the Residents Permit...
Not sure why people are still arguing about this?
It’s a pity that the numbers of the 2 forms are so similar, but they are different.

Kili01 , you are correct the meu1 is the registration doc .

But as Hudswell points out the Cyprus gov will accept meu1 and meu3 as proof of residence .

They always have since they were first issued. The MU1 (As did the Alien Card) gives a record of initial registration so you can apply for an MU3 after five years. For a non EU citizen the rules are different.

We went for our appointment to apply for the MEU 3 on the 15 July. No problems, completed the procedure and photo. Issued with receipts and told 'the MEU 3 will be posted to you within 6 weeks'. Still waiting. Think maybe time for another visit to Immigration! Anyone else had to wait this long for their MEU 3 to arrive?

Further to my post on the 12 Oct asking if anyone else was waiting for their MEU 3 to be issued. We were planning to go down to Immigration today to ask why the delay and lo, what should pop through the letter box but our MEU 3 documents.

What ever happens now on Brexit we can do more but wait and see. Not losing any sleep over it yet anyway!!

Went to Immigration last week with all our paperwork. Waited two hours and was then seen. Took 20 minutes to complete formalities but the nice lady never asked for any documentation (electricity bills, income tax returns) to prove we had lived in Cyprus for the last five years.

I was under the impression that the MEU3 gave EU citizens the right of permanent residency. If that is the case, then what happens to those in possession of the certificate when UK citizens are no longer EU citizens? Do they have to start the process again as non-EU citizens?

We went to Immigration in Paphos recently and were told that appointments were no longer available. When I asked why, I got a garbled response suggesting that their lists were full at that time. When I asked when we could make an appointment, I got the Cyprus shrug.

I think it is covered in the recent 12 page document issued by CY gov . It says we will be able to exchange the meu3 for a non eu permit .

We were in Immigration last week and people were making appointments. The earliest dates were January.

Just a rider to that.
To get documents translated into Greek it can be done at the Press and Information Office in Nicosia. It is opposite the Foreign Ministry close to the German Embassy.
To get documents Apostill'ed you go to The Ministry of Justice which is left at the first set of lights at the end of the Nicosia motorway and then about a kilometre on the right.

Lincoln, all that information is contained in the links all ready provided by Dominic and others on this site, links to official documentation. I think the TALA website are a tad guilty of promoting a degree of hysteria in their interpretation of the facts.

I have never seen mention re access to the hospital in any previous links etc .

Although I agree having the meu1 should class as formalising your residency .

Re driving licences .... I believe that you cannot apply for a Cypriot licence until you have been here for 6 months..
