The umpire and the wicket keeper, or whatever the baseball equivalent are.
It was a baseball diamond!
This puzzle crops up in Zork II. Not the bit about the masks, but you are in a maze with diamonds on the floor. The only way to crack the maze is to walk in a diamond pattern, so NE - NW - SW - SE.
It took me ages to work out the puzzle, not least because I didn't know what a baseball diamond was.
