Tourism industry issues SOS, needs more workers

That happened to our daughter working prior to going to university, underpaid her by a couple of hundred euros after her working lots of overtime. Strangely enough the manager recently phoned her up and asked her to go back .

Yes, these hoteliers need to pay their employees decent wages for the long hours that they work. Maybe they will have to if they can’t recruit enough of them...

Our grandson has had four short term jobs. One paid him in fulltwo paid him short when he left and one did,nt pay him at all.Mmmmm,name and shame comes to mind to protect other vulnerable kids.

When I was in Cyprus last year it was obvious at the bars and restaurants around Peyia that they were losing staff. On talking to the Cypriot owners they said that their Eastern European staff were moving to the UK due to the high minimum wage.

There was an article in one of our local papers recently saying that the rate of EU migration to this area, East Anglia, had actually gone up this year. So probably some truth in that. There is a real shortage of staff round here, at all levels.

Just hope the accommodation has improved for those workers who need it. Just over 10 years ago the 2 bedroom apartment next to us was rented to hotel staff. Landlord only found out, when other neighbours complained about the loud music in the early hours, that there were 12 people living there, sleeping on mattresses (lasses in the lounge and lads in the bedrooms). Needless to say he terminated the contract immediately.

With rents continuing to rise and the hotels paying such low wages it just does not add up to people coming to the island and working.
Around 500 euros rent and around 900 per month wages if your lucky what can you expect.

A few years back, when I worked in the private clinics, this time of year was always busy for the laboratory and x-ray department when the hotel groups used to bring their new employees for tests - usually 20 at a time. As one group arrived, the bus would return to the hotel for another 20 and so it went on throughout the morning. My record was testing 82 employees in one day, so you can imagine what it was like after four days, especially as private patients also needed tests done.

Indeed hoteliers need to increase their wages !
