Guests on this site.

Post by Mike.1940 »

Nearly every day I sign into Paphos Life and always there are "guests" looking at the site. Why is it they don't become members? It is so easy to join. I must admit I do not sign in every visit as on my iPad I have to remember my password and trying to remember all of them at different times is a bit of a chore. There are always some interesting topics and some silly ones but that is what makes it a joy to look at. So come on all you guests try joining and then you can have your say as well or make silly comments or whatever you want.

There is a check box when you log in which will keep you signed in until you specifically log out - that would save you having to remember your password each time.

Its not compulsary. I shop online without signing in to every store. I can watch football without being a season ticket holder.

I dont think we need any more silly comments, we have enough of those already.

I only log in if I want to make a comment and then log out.

For security reasons I never have more than one password protected site open at any one time.

There are a few things to consider when discussing "guests" - they are not always human and can be bots of various forms.

Also a member who visits the forum and then logs in will be registered as a guest until they log in.

The figures shown shows the number of guests over the past five minutes so is unlikely to be completely accurate.

In my experience more people read a forum than register and join in - which is a shame when they are for the most part extremely helpful. Can only echo what others have said - if you are reading this and are not registered then simply sign up and get involved.

Cheers

Some people do register but still don't post. Occasionally one of them will get banned. Not by me, I mean, how would I even notice them? But they might have to reboot their router or something. Then, if they get assigned an IP address that has been used by a spambot, and in Cyprus this does happen, their account automatically gets blocked.

As to why some people don't register at all, it may be because I don't force them to. It is possible to set it so that images are only viewable by people who are logged in, for instance. However, when browsing the web, I find this feature annoying when I stumble across a forum with it implemented. So I haven't implemented it here. I did for a time, as an experiment, but got so many complaints I decided it was better without it.

I find this extremely annoying too. You're not required to log into Amazon, Yahoo, the BBC, Sky or most everyday sites in order to view images, so why an expat forum?
Sometimes it's not a case of not showing images but is a consequence of not showing links which is not that unusual on forums - but of course
every one is different. Every forum that I have seen restricts certain parts to a lesser or greater extent meaning that to benefit from all the features a forum has to offer then people are forced to register to become a member. Where that line is drawn is a matter of opinion and of course news and sales sites will be different as they have different objectives from a forum.

Going back to the OP - whether a visitor can see images/links or not they would still be classed as guests.

Cheers
