Dust...back again!

Post by Mark »

Back up to level 3 out of a possible 4.

This is getting serious now with repeatedly high pollution levels.

There was a tiny dust pocket that went across the island last night.

There was only a tiny dust cloud, ca 20 km wide, with PM 2.5 particles, passing our area within 2 hours last night...

What is more concerning are the high CO emissions at the Paphos station, but then on this road from the Police headquarters down to the harbour is permanent traffic mostly cars standing in long queues uphill only meters away from the measuring unit.

Does anybody know why the dust has been so bad this year, or is it a cyclical thing like UK snow seems to be?

And again, I am a healthy individual, but the effect on my lungs, throat and mouth, make going out difficult, foolhardy even.

When will it stop!!!!

I do not remember it ever being this bad.

I am living in the Middle East since 2005 and it has never been as bad here either (although the dust here originates from Iraq and the KSA mainly, so coming from NW) - where as the one in Cyprus is mainly from Egypt I believe (originating in the SW) - but maybe there is some link between the two rather than just a coincidence?

What was amazing that yesterday's dust, with the result, that even the sun was not shining, my solar net-metering PV still produced 50% of electricity than the days before, when there was full sunshine from 6 AM to 7 PM on my roof.

We too got around 50% of a good sunny day.. I think the reading was 9kw on the inverter. But the reading on the Electric meter is always around 1kw less than that ..

Trev, what your PV system is producing is immediately deducted on the EAC meter when you have loads in the house ( consumption).... Don't you think that 50% is not excellent in that dusty conditions?

Went out for my walk today late afternoon/early evening. Very humid down at the coast. (87%) and some dust in the air. A few people with masks on or scarves covering mouths and noses. According to my ap, dust level pm10, in the moderate range. Could hardly see the hills behind Penelope's Church. Anyone wanting to see a sunset would have been disappointed as the sun disappeared behind dust clouds before it set.
