Car Question - advice please

Post by GreenArmy12 »

Hi All, My partner and I have recently imported a car from the UK, and currently have it on a temporary import (Duty Free) for 3 months on UK plates. We are planning a trip to Famagusta in June, and have fully comp insurance for whole island.I am aware that we will still have to get the local 3rd party insurance at the crossing, but are we likely to have problems returning in a UK plated car, albeit one that is in the republic legally.

Any advice appreciated

Did something similar to you,a couple of years ago, my Bro in law, kept a car over here for when he visited, kept it in bonded warehouse , while away, UK plates we crossed over in Nicosia returned through SBA Ay Nik, we were kept there for some time, until they were happy, I think there were some phone calls to the Bonded people to verify, every thing was kosher....make sure you have all the paper work with you.

Al,
In other words doing what you want to do with a car with UK number plates may pose problems when returning south again after your visit. The problem is the Republic’s side of the crossing will probably think that you imported the car illegally via Turkey.
Unless yor car is being kept in the bonded warehouse it could be hard to prove.

If it isn’t, In your place,I would have a good think before doing this. It would be better to wait until the importation procedure and the re registering of your car in Cyprus has been done and you can pay road tax and have local number plates.Your car docs should be complete, and you need to take your passports with you. Everything should be in order when crossing over then there is no worry.

Wont be a problem, providing you have the necessary paper work with you, ie the paperwork where you brought the car over to the Republic.

Hi

I echo WHL, imported the car into the South, went for a trip in the North while still on UK plates, when I crossed back South border control dashed out thinking I'd brought it in via Turkey, had all documents including import info with me and they were absolutely fine with that and waved us on our way.
