Hi retire2paphos ................. I think you have your answers, will your partners still invest?

I hope they will still consider - a large number of expats have moved to Cyprus since we joined the EU, many from what I can tell, coming here for a few years with a view to going back to the UK before they get too old and infirm to live independently in Cyprus.... BUT there are still a number of expats who have lived here for a longer time - in my family's case 22 years and we now have no roots in the UK, so even if one partner dies, there is no reason for the remaining partner to want to return to the UK - we came to Cyprus to live here permanently, not just for a few years in the sun, so I accept that we then have to live with whatever facilities are available to Cypriots, even if they're not what we would like, but it would be nice to have a choice and I also accept that we would have to pay for that - but wouldn't we also have to pay for similar care in the UK? And I know where I would rather live!

In UK, it's based on income and assets as to how much you need to contribute.

The place my dad was at was £600pw. He died before they got all the figures together but they would have taken his pension (private and government), mum's pension was adjusted to compensate she was living alone plus any savings. She was also expected to contribute £220pm on top...

Not sure how that would all work in Cyprus?

I have, in the past, tried to contact both Sir Richard Branson and Duncan Bannantyne to highlight the desperate need for Retirement/Sheltered Housing accommodation in Paphos for the growing elderly ex-pat (English) community. Neither has responded, even though the need for this type of facility could be a lucrative venture for an organisation willing to pursue it.

There was an attempt to convert part of the Laura Beach Hotel in Paphos into a care home-type facility a few years back, but for some unknown reason (possibly financial), the project did not go ahead. A big disappointment to a great many people.

My husband and I would be comforted to know that when the time comes (not for a few years, hopefully) a good standard of accommodation in a care/residential home would be available which we could rent, rather than buy.

Similar story at the other end of the Med and must be far worse now with the ageing population.

The number of times I hear someone say " well if anything happened we would just go back to the UK", but serious strokes, heart attacks, certain cancers preclude that hope and you are in the system . Luckily for non local language speakers and unlike in Spain, France, Italy and Greece most medical staff here speak good English.
