Retirement in Paphos
Re: Retirement in Paphos
Sometimes it is worthwhile using a rental agency that can at least do some checks on the tenants..

I say burn your bridges and take the plunge. If you are going to do something, do it properly and with 100% commitment. Otherwise, don't do it.
That's just my own personal opinion though.

If you rent out your home in the UK and use an agency, they will carry out regular inspections, you can also cover yourself for non payment of rent.
Dominic
That's ok if you intend NEVER to return to the UK, if you find you must as we did, it's very difficult and worrying.

I hope your post wasn't directed at me.
IF it was, firstly I was suffering from a serious infection of a hip replacement, that Paphos Hospital refused to treat anymore, thankfully I returned to the UK, where my infection was successfully treated.
Secondly by Mother has been dead for many years now.

Re: Retirement in Paphos
Nobody feels the needs to extol the virtues to justify their own actions. What a ridiculous, patronising statement. This is a topic about retiring to Paphos. Selling up completely is one of the options.Hudswell wrote: ↑Thu Mar 22, 2018 4:17 pm Jackie, it is normally those who have sold up completely who feel the need to extol the virtues of "commiting" yourself 100% just to justify their own actions...which at some later day some may regret....I own here...I also own in the UK, now does that make me committed or not....probably in the eyes of the zealots...not...yes I have the option of moving back to the UK at some date, Family, especially the Grandkids are a huge pull, and like you, if in the future we need some serious medical care, moving back is a no brainer....as is the requirement for social care, because let's face it, it is almost none existent in Cyprus. Cyprus is a wonderful place to live but I have seen the hardship and misery it can cause if your circumstances change for the worse...and having the option to return to the UK, easily, is one I value.
Now, Alan's comment was completely unnecessary, but so was yours.

Yes selling up completely is one option, but if you choose another option, is doesn't follow that one isn't committed to living in Cyprus, only that you also have the option of returning to the UK if it's necessary, without the stress and worry of selling up again, especially if you are already under pressure from health concerns. I had no option.

Re: Retirement in Paphos
What I don't get is why anybody on here is concerned whether anybody else on here thinks they are or aren't 100% committed to living in Cyprus. It is nobody else's concern, nor business.

Now I am confused, I think it was you was it not, that said either do with 100% commitment, or don't do it ?

Re: Retirement in Paphos
I did, I was referring to me though. I wasn't referring to anybody else. I honestly couldn't care one iota how committed anybody else is to living here. It is none of my business.

Re: Retirement in Paphos
Hudswell, totally agree with you. We would now always keep a base in the UK having seen other peoples experiences over the years. Other expats may regard this as us coming over here on holiday, but so what.
We have a cyta, soeasy sim. We use it in the UK for phoning Cyprus and for local calls in Cyprus. We use our Vodafone contract phone for phoning the UK now, whereas, before free roaming, we used our cytanet mobile.
Often, when we top up, we get freebies such as free international minutes. Any topup over €10 lasts 12 months.

I have a Giffgaff SIM and calls from the UK to Cyprus currently cost 6p a minute to a landline and 8p a minute to a mobile
Re: Retirement in Paphos
If you like, PM me your email and address details and I'll organize a Giffgaff sim for you, giving us both a nice bit of credit added on! Bear in mind though, your mobile needs to be unlocked / sim-free...

Re: Retirement in Paphos
This surly is a personal choice when all is said, we committed to life on Cyprus seventeen years ago, bought a property in Peyia but sold that on to live where we live now, we bought one off plan the other a small bungalow, no regrets at all in doing this, unfortunately we could not and still could not afford another UK property, but then again this can be very problematical, I had friends who had two properties one here and the other in the UK, and they got the midnight call that their house was being trashed, they also had real problem with getting rent even though it was rental managed, I feel we made the right decision, yes you can say you will miss family, yes you can look to the future regarding health issues in life, but we do not all have crystal balls laying around, nobody said it is all easy, as clearly it’s not.
Back to the OP, as you have never stayed for any period in Pafos then do so, plenty of good hotels or even a long stay apartment, if you feel unsure of any commitment then don't consider the move here, we love it but some I know didn't, lucky our direct family live a few miles down the road, but I can see how this would make a permanent move here difficult and almost impossible, take in all the information posted on forums like PL and do not make that jump until you are fully aware of Cyprus life.
Regarding phone use here, I have a Contract Cyta Sim, it is very cheap to call most countries, reliable too, cheaper than top-up cards also, I have never found a better alternative here on the island.

Re: Retirement in Paphos
Many thanks for all the great replies. So the plan is be there ASAP , we had to push back our visit by a week so hope to be there by end of the month.
We will for sure rent in a residential area for 6 months to a year whilst looking at places to buy . Hopefully we can find a trustworthy agent whereby we could switch rental properties if we found we did not like the place ?

Re: Retirement in Paphos
I have never heard of being able to switch properties if you don't like the place. You can of course but surely you would be liable for the rent for the whole of the contract you had signed..
