You can find Aphrostrom in the directory.

https://www.paphoslife.com/directory/entry/aphrostrom

When people have stopped commenting on the thread I will move it to the medical section. It will make it easier to find in future. Until then, feel free to discuss bad backs with gay abandon. :)

I'm interested in this post, having had some back issues myself. I was actually going to ask if anybody has seen latex (not memory foam) mattresses, but after HiC's post I will go and check out this mattress when over again in a few weeks. Thanks for posting.

Happy in Cyprus wrote: Wed Feb 14, 2018 3:53 pm Best thing is to call up Aphrostrom, give them your bed-size and ask the price. There is a store in Limassol.
Thank you, Limassol is more handy for me.

Same applies to walking boots. :)

It does but are you implying that the correct walking boots aid people who suffer from bad backs as I thought this was a thread about people with back problems & beds? :?

IMHO, Lloyd, I think mattresses benefit from being turned over in all directions far more frequently than once a year.

I turn my orphpaedic divan mattress once a month, every other linen change. It certainly feels 'newer' each time! Fully agree with your comments on handles on the sides of the mattress. Without them, try turning it on your own, and there's your back gone again!

Pure penny-pinching by whichever manufacturers who don't include them...

I have an orthopaedic mattress, with a top layer of softer material. I then use a down mattress topper and it is really comfy and warm. It is essentially a very hard mattress with pocket springs etc.

My whole family have ‘bad backs’ although mine is sporadic. I can sneeze and knock it out and have to lie on a floor for a couple of hours.

I also fractured my skull and damaged vertebrae diving out of a window (longer story) and this has re-occurred as a problem in later life as pains in arms and hands. I used to use a Chiro at times.... thankfully been ok for a few years.

Usual culprit for putting my back out is lifting heavy shopping bags into and out of my little hatchback. I know all about kinetics and ergonomics, lift with your legs, etc.

But lifting a heavy bag out of the car boot ALWAYS involves reaching and lifting with arm muscles only, doesn't it? Hence, click! There goes your back again, leaving you hobbling around for a week, stooped over...

Arrrrgggghhhh! AL :(

I have had a ‘bad back ‘ for some years. I have intermittant chiropractic treatment and a weekly massage which helps me a lot. For several years I have slept on an excellent mattress.
Mine is a combination of layers, a pocket sprng mattress which is covered by 10cm of memory foam which is covered by, a top layer of wool to make one deep mattress. I find it is very comfortable as it moulds to support my back correctly. It is also comfortable in winter or summer conditions. It was made to measure in the UK and shipped out here.
It was bought from UK Bed Linen who were in Chloraka. But later on they moved to a new store on the Polis Rd and changed their name.

I’ve had back problems since I was about 16 - too much Sport, probably the rugby. Other than periodioc trips to the osteopath, The two things that have had the biggest benefit for me have been the Tempur mattress we bought some years ago and proper orthotic inserts for my shoes that had a phenomenal impact when I was still working. Since moving here i had stopped wearing them then last year started to have problems and had a huge problem with heel pain which was agony, especially when driving round trips to Larnanca. Invested in some Birkenstock sandals and the pain went almost immediately. Since invested in some Birkenstock insoles for trainers etc, also brilliant, combined with the mattress very few bad back days now

Footwear affects your back? Oh lord. So dancing around in Neo's a couple of weeks ago with high heeled boots could explain my current relapse. And there was me thinking it was too much time spent pruning orange and olive trees. Come to think of it, it really was after the dancing that things deteriorated.....

Some 35/40 years ago I suffered tremendously from lower back pain, it shot down my left leg and in factI was laid up in bed for two weeks.I was advised to buy a "back swing apparatus"...You trap yourself in it and you swing, using your own weight into an upside down position like a bat..Of course this was much to the amusement of my kids....However "bingo" over the next few months it gradually got better and I have had no problems since...Hope this helps.

My better-half has fibromyalgia and has suffered bad backs continuously. She is a great believer in “whole-body balance” and has been treated for everything from teeth, neck down to feet in efforts to regain the body-balance. She attends a chiro every week and two lots of deep massage every week. She does about 8 gym classes a week as well, as a means to stay from being infirm - some fibromyalgia sufferers end up in wheelchairs.

There are theories that your teeth and particularly jaw alignment can affect balance. As an example, when Beckham went to Italy to play, he was given intensive medical examination and they concluded his peripheral vision was being imparted by problems with his teeth, being sent to their specialist for treatment. My missus has worn a night plate to stop the clenching that is syptomatic with fibromyalgia, that can also cause back and neck problems.

So, I wouldn’t discount any types of treatment. What works for you is always worth it.

Happy in Cyprus wrote: Thu Feb 15, 2018 10:31 am Surely that means you are out of practice? Athletes know that daily practice, perhaps several times a day, is the key to staying supple and avoiding injury
You got me there HIC  several times a day?.....maybe forty years ago...Happy days :D

HIC, you can get the Birkenstock insoles in Paphos. There’s a Birkenstock shop in the new old town on Archbishop Makarios Avenue III - on the left if walking towards market. €35 as I recall, worth a try as it makes huge difference to the support and alignment of the spine. The podiatrist I went to see some years ago about a dodgy toe put me on to them. I was lucky that even.wirh my flat feet I didn’t need custom ones and a standard one - of the cor4ect size and fitting - did the trick.

I had a bad lower back for years, every 3 or 4 months I would be hobbling about then it would get better, eventually I had a CT scan and it was found I had 2 bulging discs and one herniated disc, the doctor said I should build up my core body strength as if its weak then the spine has to do all the work - so that’s what I have done for the past 3 years with a bootcamp style workout, press-ups, planks, lunges, squats etc.

Since then I have not had problem at all 😉

There is plenty on this subject…
