I get the impression that hospitals only want to treat people, not be revenue collectors for HM Government.
Alan
Maybe, but, rightly or wrongly, they are not slow to charge for parking, even for staff working at the hospital, to supplement their funds.

Something David Cameron bought in for UK pensioners abroad in receipt of a British State pension probably on the advice of lawyers who consulted with The European Court about the subject .
WHL not quite true about the USA , I worked in healthcare out there and there is the same deal to a foreigner in the UK . If you are admitted with say a heart attack or stroke and have no insurance you will be stabilised and receive the full care to keep you alive. However any further treatment will require payment ( my triple by pass in 2007 cost $187,000 and change ) ! The County Hospitals in the US will offer medical treatment without insurance and do an amazing job . Standing in one every Friday and Saturday Saturday night in Phoenix and seeing the number of gunshot victims, horrendous domestic violence victims etc being treated, none with any form of insurance, is something I will never forget. Cheers Mike

Trevor I think it is often people who have maintained an address in the UK and have never let their UK Doctor they no longer live in the UK who have replacement surgery etc. I have known several people who have used the system like this. Personally I agree with Hudswell that you should not be able to access both Cypriot and UK systems unless for emergency treatment of course.

UK state pensioners living in another EEA country

9.51 From April 2015, all pensioners in receipt of a UK state pension who are living abroad in the EEA or Switzerland and have registered an S1 form from the UK with the local authorities in their EEA country of residence, and their family members, will be able to access all healthcare in the UK as though they were ordinarily resident and should not be charged for treatment.

According to what I read in another forum you´ll still receive an invoice - even for emergency treatment.

Lloyd, you may be qualified to receive your medical card as a resident having paid into the Cyprus Social Insurance scheme. Otherwise you would have had to provide the S1 for the 'reciprocal' scheme card.

I think the mention of S1 is to ensure you cancel it (if you had it) so the NHS don't continue to make payments for you. This is a good document from 2016 - look at 5 and 5.1 - neither mention that the S1 is a requirement for registration. https://www.ageuk.org.uk/Documents/EN-G ... ?dtrk=true

As an aside to the main topic I have just moved home in the UK and we have been asked for our NI number from practically every bit of paperwork involved in moving. From the solicitor dealing with the sale/purchase to getting a bus pass in a different county, water, sewage. etc.

I have never come across this before and can only think this is a way of keeping tabs on the population. Not that I object if it helps save the country money.

One point on UK NI contributions. When this is deducted from your salary, assuming you are on PAYE, it is put together with all the other employees' NI and tax deductions and sent to the inland revenue. It is just another tax and is not linked to the NHS in any way.

On a different tak, I suspect those shouting loudly about foreigners using the NHS and the need for the NHS to push strongly for payment, are the same ones who shout loudly about the need to reduce managers in the NHS. Perhaps they think nurses could chase up payments when they have nothing to do.

Spot on about shouting about abuse of the NHS and over paid Managers. The Managers are the ones who should be stopping the abuse of the NHS, and collecting monies due, not over worked, under paid nurses ! The trouble is that there are lots of Managers, doing exactly what ? who knows.

One thing I can tell you, is that there are loads of NHS admin managers blocking our local side streets with their nice expensive cars Mon-Fri 0800 to 1800..

Double parking, to the extent that fire engines, ambulances, dustcarts, delivery wagons etc cannot get through! Madness!

All because these fat cats are too TIGHT to pay for secure CCTV staff parking just over the road from the L&D Hospital. GRRRR...
