How sad is this.
Re: How sad is this.
On paper it sounds dreadful, but I would be wary of signing a petition without knowing more about the dogs in question. Although they are trained animals who have given sterling service and saved lives, they tend to"bond" with their handlers. How safe they would be with new owners and how well they would settle down in domestic circumstances is something which those who command the military dogs section and the vets who are responsible for looking after their health and welfare are the best ones to judge. A lot depends on the individual dog. But a sentimental public may not be the best judge.
By the way, I am a dog lover myself and have owned and looked after dogs for most of my life.

I understand what you are saying Dee and maybe the answer is to have a retirement home for these beautiful animals who have served so well. When we were in France a couple of years ago we visited a retirement home for UK police horses, many of whom had been traumatised by the violence they had received in riots etc. It was a charity run by an ex UK cop and not funded at all by the UK Government although they visited every year to ensure they were well cared for!!
Re: How sad is this.
Would it not be the best idea that when these military dogs are deemed to be at the end of their useful army life, they get transferred to bond with new handlers in UK Police and/or Border controls?
To sniff out local bomb factories and smuggled explosives, maybe? Perhaps enhance their training to sniff out odious drugs in local houses and cars/vans/trucks rolling off the cross channel ferries, too?
