Winter Snow

Post by Alfie »

How likely is snow in the Troodos, on an annual basis? Is it a dead cert?

Certainly had plenty of snow in the Troodos the last two years. Nothing yet this year though.

You can use this webcam to monitor the situation.

It was bloody cold this morning in Polemi. :)

Smashing family video thanks, Lloyd! It really brightened up my day, especially Grandad losing control and smacking into a pine tree! I bet that hurt a bit?

Thanks for showing it again- AL :)

And how cold is the sea in December and January? I read about going skiing and water skiing in the same day, though I would settle for a sledge and a snorkel.

The tourists may risk the sea in December but not many permanent residents....

You may be lucky to find some snow on Troodos but it lasts more when it arrives after the new year

Alfie,
As already said not many people who live here venture into the sea after Oct-Nov. Some tourists particularly those from N Europe, such as Russians and Germans, do swim in the winter. But you can soon tell the sea temp by dipping your foot in it!! Or of course you could wear a wet suit......
The snow on Troodos is usually at its best after Christmas. But we will need to have some substantial rain first, at present the island is in near drought conditions, although we have had some rain showers recently.

I suspected that, Trev, looking at the PL webcam pictures over the past two or three days.

Heaps of rain bearing low-level cumulus clouds over them thar hills, by the look of it! Let's hope the reservoirs start to fill up soon...

Yes, rain is forecast, but so far not a drop here! Fingers crossed that it is coming and that when it does it will find its way to the reservoirs which are currently less than 20% full!
Al, do you look at the Cy Govt water development website?

No, Dee.. But plenty of people here on PL do (you, Max, Devil ét al), so I know that reservoir levels are perilously low at present.

Why on earth don't they reinstate that 'mobile' desalination on the coast at Mandria (that Dom recently blogged) to provide some short term backup water resource?

Because the previous mayor of Paphos cancelled the contract and the equipment has been removed! I think that the present mayor is trying to get a new contract arranged to build a replacement, but no guarantees when that will be built.
It's diabolical what has happened....
The Cy Mail the other day said that new water pipelines are to be built to link the Everitou and the Kannaviou Dams with the Asprokremnos. Time quoted was 8 months. But these 2 reservoirs are also perilously low. Drove past the latter last Sunday, water level at the bottom of the dam wall.
Pray for heavy , sustained rain over the mountains.....

Although raining heavily as I write this yesterday was slightly different, warm sunny and to be honest perfect, even people on wave boards..

Sandy Beach near Lemba. By the way, so much junk mostly plastic all over the beach, truly bad!

Taken a week or so ago at the Asprokremmos Dam near the airport, looks reasonable to me and no doubt will be filling up rapidly very soon.

Hi Lincoln,
I probably read the same article as you about the temporary desalination plant, but also think that it must have been instigated by the municipality as a temporary fix, the last time Paphos dams were getting very low. I also remember reading he/they decided to cancel the contract after several years when there was sufficient rainfall as these plants are very costly to maintain and to run. The present mayor was quoted as trying to stop the equipment from being removed and to reinstate the contract,or to draw up a new one. But I think that was to no avail.
