I seem to remember HiC do something similar in the past and he got nominated for a 'Hearts Of Gold' award or similar.
Well deserved.

In our little cul-de-sac not far from M1 J11, Lloyd, a few Polish couples have bought (or are renting) houses. Smashing folks, very friendly, very hard working. I help them in any way I can, loans of step ladders, hedgetrimmer, etc etc.
They have improved the quality and neighbourliness of our close for sure, in the 40 years we've been living here. Pavel treated me to a half litre of Polish fruit brandy, just for keeping a watchful eye on his house out of my bedroom window, while he and wifey went back to Poland for a fortnight holiday...
Cheers- AL

Re: Genuine sounding guy in need of help
I think it's fantastic that there are so many people willing to help somebody in need that they have never met, it's a testament to the truly generous nature of some individuals.
My concern is that it might be better to help this person return to his home country where he can have the support of his own family and government going forward. We all know how little support there is in Cyprus for foreign nationals and this individual has shown how easy it is to get taken advantage of by ruthless employers without any local support.
I believe that by helping this person in this way there is the possibility of just kicking the can down the road and that he will be in the same situation again in a few months/years time.
I mean no offence to this individual, but some people are not cut out to relocate to a different country (especially Cyprus) and can easily get caught in a never ending cycle.
Once again I would like to congratulate the individuals who are willing to help but I fear there efforts may turn out to be futile.

Re: Genuine sounding guy in need of help
I would disagree strongly on that. It is easy to say somebody is not "cut out" without walking in their shoes. Bad times can befall anybody, through no fault of their own.

Yes, Lloyd- you are a Saint, Sir! And Nadia... I've gone through quite a few tissues reading these updates, and wish Stephan the very best of luck for the future...

Re: Genuine sounding guy in need of help
Well done Lloyd and Al, I'm sure your generosity will be greatly appreciated.
By no means did I mean to belittle your efforts or Stephan's situation, it's just that experience has taught me that if somebody is sleeping rough on an old mattress there is usually a more underlying cause than not being paid a few weeks wages.
I wish you all the best with your efforts and sincerely hope that I'm proved wrong.

Re: Genuine sounding guy in need of help
I don't agree with Paulo. If you are on extremely low wages and living from week to week, losing €400 that you have earned can tip you over the edge, which seems to be what has happened here. There but for the grace of God.... We shouldn't judge anyone u less we know the circumstances.
Re: Genuine sounding guy in need of help
That is excellent (and very tearful) news of some kind soul offering a three month free apartment for 'Stephan' to stay in, while he gets back up and running again (if confirmed). Tears of joy are streaming out of my eyes while I write...
Whoever this person is who has made this very kind and generous gesture, and you go ahead with it, may God bless you, as you will be a saint!

Re: Genuine sounding guy in need of help
Hear! Hear! I too am meeting Nadia with a donation. I will try and find out what size he is, to get some clothes donated,. Don't forget, he will still need food, so if anyone feels able to donate a few tins, or packets, tea, coffee, I am sure it will be appreciated. What a wonderful person who has given him a roof over his head. I feel most of us don't mind helping someone like him, it is a totally different scenario to someone who drinks their wages instead of paying rent, or doesn't want to work.
Re: Genuine sounding guy in need of help
UPDATE* Nadia rang me to say Stefan has started work this morning and sorting himself out. So thank you to everyone who helped.
