Car Tyres validity
Car Tyres validity
When we did our last MOT test the examiner informed us that we would have replace the tyres before the next test. This was because they were over six years old.
However I have since been told that there is no such law. The examiner showed us a document fixed to the MOT station wall stating that tyres must not be more than 6 years old. The tyres are in perfect condition with deep treads.
Anyone know whats going on?

Re: Car Tyres validity
My guess is that this is related to heat ageing of the tyres. They may have plenty of tread left, but if the rubber hardens due to the Cyprus heat, you will be able to see hairline cracks in the tyre wall. From an MOT inspector, who told me why my car had failed!
Re: Car Tyres validity
We experienced this some time ago before we moved here permanently & were only visiting a coupleof times a year. There was plenty of tread on the tyres but they were very old & subsequently, we noticed that they were starting to crumble!

http://www.tyreshop.com.cy/en/web-pages ... e-a-tyre/4Generally speaking, this means that any tyre that’s five years old – or older – should be replaced even if it’s got sufficient tread depth.
Re: Car Tyres validity
Well thank you all for the replies. Still not sure if it is a law or not.

Me neither Lincoln... Perhaps go to another MOT station without taking your car in and ask there.
I use the 'Space' one on Polis road opposite Lidl. I have never had any problems there. A recent 'fail' on a part, but that is OK.. Afternoons are quieter and they shut for lunch..

Surely what's most important is whether it is safe or not?
Regarding MOT centres, the directory has some:

This is the one we always use as well. The notice is up on the wall.

Re: Car Tyres validity
Surely this is an advisory visible check on the MOT list, to see if the tyre walls are cracked due to long term exposure to the sun? If you always park under a shaded carport, or underground garage perhaps, there should be no problem, I would have thought?

Re: Car Tyres validity
I had tyres fitted here, that according to the date stamp were already three years old?

Wait till the next MOT and see what happens then
