Pool a nice shade of green

Post by Martee »

Good Morning
Arrived yesterday with grandchildren in tow and after putting cases upstairs my grandson said "Grandad why have you made the pool water light green".
Went and looked and it's a nice light green colour.
Have someone looking after the pool but can't get hold of him.
Is there a quick fix solution? It's just that there are so many pool "specialists" saying put this in and put that in.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First thing is to check your pH reading. Without a good result (7.2 - 7.4) any chemicals you put will have only a minimum effect. Don't mix chemicals.
For a light green colour which indicates algae are growing I had always the best result putting the blue staff (water clarifier). If this does not help
then algaecide and run the pool 10 hours. Of course you must also check that your chlorine level is not low.

If you had a solar pool pump installed than you would not have a green pool even when chemicals are on a low. Solar pump runs from morning to evening and keeps the water moving when is sunshine. Algae grow only if there is Sun and the water is NOT moving....

Definitely go to your local pool shop and buy a good algaecide, follow instructions.
Looks like your pool cleaners not been doing their job.

Many thanks for the reply Max,
Makes sense as when looking at pump runtime only on for 3 short periods during day.
So off to pool shop to get what's needed.
Does anyone know approx price for solar pump with installation?

Other thing is chlorine tabs are being used in the skimmers as I have no chlorine granules in the store,I seem to recall a posting a couple of months ago saying the best way for these to be used was with a surface floater rather than through the skimmer baskets as this could cause big probs.

No, its due to not enough chlorine in the pool, tablets are not enough, you need granules to bring the levels up the pool should be run at least 4-6 hours constant per day, more if its in permanent use.
Get the floater also.

I would say get a new pool maintenance person as well, for future visits. You are now having to do a job that you have been paying somebody else to do. Check the new person is insured is what somebody on here advised me. Lots of choice out there, but not everyone is created equal in the pool cleaning world I think!

I look after the pool (45 tons) of my friend and after installing a solar pool pump system in 2010 my maintenance work is reduced to a limited time waste. I hoover once a month and put 2 triple tabs in the skimmers (week) thats all. My friend saved in the last 7 years ca 7000 Euro on electricity costs while he paid for the pump around 3500 Euro. The pool looked always absolutely sparkling, never green or other problems. No wonder as the solar pump is filtering ca 4 times the amount of water and no insects or other debris is sinking to the bottom of the pool. Only the skimmer baskets need cleaning every time I put a chlorine tab there. On our PL Directory https://www.paphoslife.com/directory/category/energy you will find the phone no and email address to find out which price it is nowadays. Perhaps it helps if you mention PL... ;)

Seem to remember a thread some time ago when it was said that you should never put Tablets in the skimmers as the chlorine concentration was bad for the joints and the pipework. I use granules, much better control and in the winter, when the pump isn't on so much, Tablets in a floater.

You are right saying that it is bad for the pipework if one uses tabs in the skimmers. Obviously with a solar pump moving the water from sun-up to sundown it is not happening in my case. Of course a floater would also be better together with the solar pump if it is not getting stuck in front of the skimmer and prevent them proper working.

Shock with chlorine granules. Early next day put in floculant. Later in the day vac to waste. Should be good enough to swim in by then, if not crystal clear. Oh, and sack the pool guy.

Reminds me of a couple who arrived at their Villa to be confronted with a dead cat in their pool...it fell apart when trying to remove it...so it had been in the pool for quite a time.
Naturally the pool cleaner blamed THEM for not telling him that they were visiting soon..

Well just a quick update and once again thanks for all the info.

Treated pool with chlorine granules and algeacide after a quick brush and backwash.
Went out for the day came back and checked pool readings-a little more chlorine added.
Up this morning and pool is 100% within parameters and sparkling with pump on all night.
