Paphos pensioner suspected of poisoning neighbour’s cat

A CASE of suspected malicious cat poisoning which took place on Tuesday is being investigated in a Paphos village, according to local police.

Paphos police spokesman, Michalis Ioannou, told the Cyprus Mail said that poison had been found at the home of a 77-year-old female suspect and is currently being tested to see if it matches the poison that killed a neighbour’s pet cat.

The suspect was brought in for questioning by police on Tuesday afternoon, after her 44-year-old neighbour made a complaint against her.

The incident took place at around 3pm on Tuesday afternoon in the village of Simou. According the cat owner’s statement, the two had had ‘discussions’ about her pet in the past, which is why she suspects her neighbour. She found her pet dead in her garden, said Ioannou.

“At 4pm, an hour after the incident, the cat owner reported the case at Stroumpi police station and during a police search of the suspect’s house, we found some poison. We took it as an exhibit and are waiting for results from an autopsy being performed by a specialist veterinarian to see if the poison matches.”

He said that the 77-year-old was brought in to the police station as a suspect and that she had denied the accusation in a written statement.

Once the woman’s son found out that his mother had been taken to the police station at Stroumpi, he barged in and started shouting at police and pushed one of the officers.

“He was arrested for assaulting a police officer and was formally charged. The case will go to court,” he said.

In the meantime, police are awaiting the test results of the cat’s post mortem to see how to proceed with the case.
