For advice on fans, I would recommend this company:

http://www.fantopiafans.com/index.html

They serviced our fans and the difference was phenomenal.

A fan, with open windows/doors with fly-screens can work really well.

It won't cool, but depending on location, you can setup a breeze from the outside cooler air.

Some don't like the air-conditioning, which isn't healthy anyway...

Others who aren't acclimatised, like holiday-makers, need air-con.

We mainly use ceiling fans in the lounge during the day and in the bedroom all night sometimes.. The door from the bedroom to outside is always open.

No, in fact we don't have aircon in the bedrooms. We are in an insulated bungalow though with a pitched roof and a loft. So it is not a concrete building that holds the heat..

Weather conditions inland like Polemi, where for example Trev lives are very different to areas at Paphos Town and again different near the sea. High humidity in Summer is much more uncomfortable if you don't have air-cons in order to reduce damp condition in the houses. Of course the newest Inverter type units are much better and more economic than old one's ( and more hygienic) Larger units use more electricity (higher COP) than larger one's. For normal bedrooms 9-12000 BTU are enough while for larger areas one should install 18000 BTU. Bigger than that is a waste of money and energy. Daikin are very famous for quality and produced in Europe (higher price) while other brands like LG are lower price but also quite good. There are many companies selling air-cons but only a few with their own mechanics. (like Greenair Paphos or the Haier dealer near the Anavargos Post office.)

Good advice for your new A/C unit is to RTFM!

Set it to Eco mode, where it's just basically dehumidifying the room, and maintaining the temperature at around 28ºc - comfortable night's sleep!

There are many different micro climates in the areas around Paphos. I live above Tala at 1300 ft. Not high enough to completely avoid the high humidity levels in Paphos or the coastal area, but generally its less humid here. I have recently bought two new inverter aircons. Mine are Samsung, one 9000 btu, the other 1800 btu with a 5 yr warranty. Very quiet and efficient. But like Trev, I also use ceiling fans, mine are the basic 5 blade type, a couple also have lights. They operate either from an on/off wall switch, or from pull cords. They are 3 speed. They are just as effective as the fancy and more expensive type. We have had no trouble with them. We clean them ourselves, by wiping the blades with a damp cloth.
The aircons need servicing annually.
Hope this helps.

Pafos, yes I agree. But it also depends on the level of humidity and the ambient outside air temperature. If the air outside is very hot and humid, even open windows with fly screens don't necessarily provide a comfortable working environment.
In those conditions I close all windows and use the aircon, but at a temperature of 26 or- 27c.
This dehumidifies the inside air of the house and even makes cooking in hot weather bearable.

You are more than welcome, m8! My advice will definately save you a fortune on leccy bills (as I used to pay these during my long lets), plus give you a comfortable sleep overnight..

Close the bedroom door, and have the A/C on Eco, low fan setting. You can even crack the bedroom window open an inch, plus have a mains liquid mozzie killer runner through the night (all the supermarkets sell them. cheap as chips!)

When you pop into the bathroom for a pee @ 3am, you won't believe the difference in humidity levels between the two areas, and will soon learn to CLOSE the bedroom door behind you, in BOTH directions, LOL!

Cheers- AL ;)

Not too keen on having the plug-in mozzie killers on all night. May be daft thought but, if they're sending out chemicals all night, I feel they can't be good for us? Thats just an instinctive reaction cos I've no proof either way.

I think my next query may well be about insect screens on windows and doors, although I've been told the mozzie b's still manage to get through those?
For me it is a" must have" (fly screens) as they love me too much (mozzies), and if it is nicely done, good quality and fine mesh, it is perfect as only occasional a fruit fly manages to go through. The plug-in killer are very bad for you as it is a permanent chemical what you breathe in. Better but not perfect is to spray Aroxol yellow if you discover mozzies and after 10 minutes to change the air in the room...

Yes we too have flyscreens on all doors and windows. It is a necessity as the doors are open all day and the bedroom patio door is open 24/7 when we are in..

I too have fly screens on all doors and windows, Mozzies prefer blonds as they say and are very friendly with me! I also have ceiling fans in all rooms (and a couple outside) and aircon only in the living area. I don't get many bugs in the house (except tiny ants) but if I do the cat soon sorts them out!

A tad hot today so far X :D

Actually, the "Recommended" section is where you post your recommendations of contractors and companies who have helped you. If you want to know somebody, you should just ask here.

Then, when you have used their services, and if you agree that they were pretty spiffing, you should post a recommendation in the "Recommended" section.

Fear not though, by blindless friend. I shall move your thread here, so that it gets the views it deserves.
