More Paphos Murals
More Paphos Murals
Over the weekend I was out with my camera, seeing how work on Old Paphos has progressed in the last six months. That is the subject of another blog (watch this space). However, while I was taking photos I found some more murals which I think warrant their own article...

Hope you don't mind me adding some photos here too, Dominic.
I too was in the old town last Saturday morning and took these.

Feel free to add away. I actually showed some pics for those murals in a previous blog you may like:

Re: More Paphos Murals
I had my thoughts about the Murals and what the artists want to express.
No 1 (stupid cupid?) could have something to do with the so called Aphrodite Cult of Kouklia as one can see the "defloration stone" on the left and the stone under the girls feed. The "Lover" looks like a foreigner. The women on the right is obviously pregnant. There is one of the many information about the Cult of Kouklia where every woman before marrying must surrender their virginity to a unknown man..http://www.academicroom.com/article/cyp ... t-barnabas
No 3 (Cherubs) What I can read is pandemos which sense is that of Aphrodite uniting all the inhabitants of a country into one social or political body. The second sense describing her as goddess of low sensual pleasures as Venus vulgivaga. On the other hand the "High Tech Cherub" holding a mobile could mean a modern form of Pandora's Box and what is in Wiki explained: Today the phrase "to open Pandora's box" means to perform an action that may seem small or innocent, but that turns out to have severely detrimental and far-reaching negative consequences. Definitely it is Aphrodite emerged of the sea off Aphrodite's rocks....
No 9 (Hands) I can remember school children playing that as a game in the yards many years back....but have no idea what's behind it.

Honest opinion. I don't like them an cannot see how they will enhance the area of the old town.
There, I have said it!

Think I'm with you Pat, struggling to see the Cyprus connection. Much as I see any connection with the London graffiti, whoever does it!
Re: More Paphos Murals
Most if not all of the photographed artwork was painted last October. I think they are great, and brighten up many a dull carpark in Paphos. If we all liked the same sort of art the world would be very boring though.
This is the blurb that accompanies the youtube vid:
The 2nd Street Art Square took place from the 5th until the 9th of October 2016 at Kostas Karnavalos Street in Pafos and included the participation of 12 renowned artists from all around the world Participating Artists: Fikos (GR), Bane (SWI), Pest (CY), Rusl (GER), Lune82 (GR), BillyGEE (GR), Alex Martinez (GR), Dhal (S. KOR), Batu Gundal (CY), Bankrupt.CY (CY) Chari Chrotoforou. Ευχαριστίες / Special thanks: Swiss embassy & Kimonos Art Center

I agree.
I especially liked the Banksy-style goatman.

I actually had to drive down the road they are visible from today. It is quite spectacular from a car. Though I was a bit annoyed as I really wanted to be going in the opposite direction. I did a few laps of the Kennedy Square circuit before I found the shortcut I was looking for.
