Road tax renewal deadline is tomorrow— late payments will incur a €10 surcharge

Vehicle owners in Cyprus have until the end of tomorrow, Tuesday 31 March, to renew their road tax for 2026, as the extended renewal period — originally due to close on 11 March — reaches its final day. The Department of Road Transport is urging owners to act now to avoid delays.

From 1 April, late renewals will incur a surcharge of €10 plus an amount equal to 10% of the road tax owed. Driving without a valid licence after the deadline can result in a €150 fine from police.

How and where to renew

Road tax can be renewed online, at banks, citizen service centres, district post offices, and at the district offices of the Road Transport Department. Note that banks no longer process renewals at the counter — bank payments must be completed online only. The Road Transport Department’s online portal is at rtd.mcw.gov.cy. Licences can be renewed for three, six, nine or twelve months.

What you need

To complete the renewal, vehicle owners must provide a valid certificate of roadworthiness and proof of insurance. The last three digits of the owner’s identity card, Alien Card or passport number are also required. The renewal is only complete once the “Print Road Tax Licence” screen appears showing the vehicle registration number and expiry date — if the process is interrupted before this point, it must be repeated.

If you are not renewing

Those who renewed in 2025 but do not plan to renew for 2026 must submit a notice of vehicle immobilisation online. Vehicles not renewed or immobilised may be removed from the Road Transport Department register.
