Cost of electric bills for PV owners to increase by 16%+

Post by mark4007 »

There has been a lot of noise in the press about the rise in the tariffs charged by the EAC for electric use. We were told at the end of the saga that the tariffs would increase by about 3%.

But if you look at the revised tariffs from 1 July as published on the EAC website you will see that the only tariff with any significant increase is that for the Network Usage. This has increased from 3.05 euros per unit to 3.66 euros per unit (a 20% increase)

For those who pay the full cost of electricity (ie no solar power) I can see how this increase will work out at about a 3% increase in their bills.

But for PV owners who have a surplus credit (under the net metering arrangement) this tariff is by far the largest element of the cost of importing electricity. This means for them their electric bills are likely to increase by around 16-20% depending upon how much is imported.

Of course in actual cash terms this increase for PV owners is unlikely to be a significant amount.

Even at the new charges per Kwh, we are still on a winner with our PV panels. Ours paid for themselves within 6 years. We have an e car ordered, a VW ID3, and Greenair have fitted a Huwaii charger for us, which draws electric for charging from all 3 phases, so we will be using up some of our surplus. A lot of chargers only draw from 1 phase, so you are using more from the grid.

20% of nearly nothing is still peanuts for PV owners like me. With the new tariff by same consumption of electricity my May/June bill from EAC would be 70 cent higher now, so what..... :)

Just received recent bill June/July and as I was using air-con in the bedroom all night, consumption was higher than last period, with the effect that my bill was with EU 6.50 higher than last time. (Less than a nice ice cream at the harbour)

It is a small increase but its interesting for two reasons..

1) which tarriffs the EAC is increasing (network access rather than cost of generating electricty) and
2) at somepoint network access is going to become seperate from generation when we seperation running the network from generation (1 oct?)

presumably the tarriffs charged for network access will flow to the body running the network (rather than the EAC)..
