Getting To Foinikas From Anarita

Post by Dominic »

Foinikas lies on the banks of the Asprokremmos Reservoir. Historically imporant as a former base of the Knights Templar, it has been abandoned since the Turkish invasion of 1974. When the valley was dammed in the Eighties, its fate was sealed. To get to it, you normally have to approach from the direction of Nata along a bumpy off-road track. However, when reservoir water levels are as low as they are at the moment, it is possible for a slightly less arduous approach from the direction of Anarita and the Water Treatment Plant. In this film we show you that route.

Foinikas always felt like one of those places you hear about but never quite manage to reach without a 4x4 and a prayer. Didn’t realize the water levels opened up a route from Anarita, that’s a game changer

I walked to Foinikas from the water treatment building a few weeks ago. An enjoyable walk if you don't mind the uphill on the way back. It's not too steep though. The walk took me around 2 hours round trip but that's me taking it very easy, walking down a bit as well as up to Foinikas, and stopping for lots of photos. It was a bit cooler then and there was still some green and yellow flowers, but I'd expect still nice enough now if it's hot too hot
