Orthodox Easter Sunday - effect on electricty

Orthodox Easter Sunday is a day when demand for electrity is low in Cyprus. Indeed the lowest daily demand for electricty in 2023 was on easter Sunday.

On easter Sunday 2023 it is estimated that 59.8% of RES energy was curtailed.
On easter Sunday 2024 that figure increased to 69% and significantly most of the solar PV that was controlable by the EAC was switched off from 11.45 to 3pm.

With Sunny weather forcast for today I expect a higher rate of curtailment for today than last year. I exoect that the supply from all the solar parks to be turned off for hours (4 or 5 hours?). In addition I expect at least some of the domestic PV, maybe all of it, which has the cut off switch will be turned off.

Even so whether the load in the system will be high enough to be above the minimum needed to keep the generators turning and maintain a stable electric supply remains to be seen. There must be a small chance of electric blackouts today.

So if there are no blackouts then we will at least know that you are talking a load of horse shit.

lol.. yeah you are quite right a "small chance" obviously was a prediction that there would be blackouts...

Incidentially, Greece was so concerned about the effect of easter on the electric supply system it ran a trial run (see https://energypress.eu/energy-authoriti ... trial-run/) and it suspended cross border imports (see https://energypress.eu/electricity-impo ... tect-grid/ )

It’s kind of wild that we’re producing too much clean energy and just switching it off. Feels like such a waste, especially when storage isn’t really keeping up. Cyprus and Greece definitely need to level up the grid to handle this better, curtailing that much solar on a sunny holiday just ain’t it.
