My husband and I paid into the Social Insurance system in Cyprus from 2006 until 2012. We had a Limited Company at the time so we paid a hefty amount each month.

I turned 65 in March '24 and had submitted my application form to the International Pensions Department in good time. I hadn't heard anything from Nicosia for several months so I emailed Eupensions@sid.mlsi.gov.cy in October. Things moved very quickly after that.

They asked if I lived permanently in the UK and requested a scanned copy of my Birth Certificate which I duly returned along with a copy of our Marriage Certificate . . . .just for good measure. πŸ™‚ I received my first Cypriot pension payment early December backdated to March. I receive €113 per month but I think there is a 2.65% reduction. Once I got in touch directly with them the process was simplicity itself. When my husband retired in 2016 he had to jump through several hoops before he received his Cypriot pension so the system has improved immensely.

Thankfully, we kept our BoC account in Paphos after we returned to the UK because at the time they simply would not pay a pension into a Sterling account. I don't know what the situation is now?

Just this week I have requested an online code from the DWP to apply for my OAP in the UK. Like you, I am one of those ladies born at the wrong time!

Best of Luck. X

Hi Maggie,

This has been real pain - I contacted the SID EUPensions in Cyprus in January this year as I'd heard nothing back from DWP International UK after they confirmed my pension claim had been sent to SID in October 2024.

A gentleman in the Cyprus Pensions came back to me a couple of weeks later to inform me they had no record of any claim on my behalf and requested details of how the claim was sent to them, whether it was a hard copy by mail or be electronic method.

Emails back to DWP International (2 of them, sent several weeks apart in January) raised absolutely no response.

So I dug into the internet searches and came up with the email address for the Secretary - I've kept all of the emails in one single tracked email message, so forwarded everything to the DWP Secretary in the middle of February.

We went on holiday towards the end of that same month and I received an email response from a member of staff at the DWP to state the reference numbers of the claim they say was sent in October and that they've sent a second claim (different reference number) again in February.

I've just received an email from K. Malekkides in Cyprus to state they now have the claim and they need me to send them pretty much the same information (they have asked for the Marriage Certificate also) and details of any pension/employment payments for my husband.

They also need a Bank Account which accepts SEPA bank transfers, which apparently our current joint account does exactly that (according to the google search I entered).

So it sounds like we're good to go.
Can I ask please, did you send your paperwork by postal mail or by electronic email?

I'm going to send the documents by email attachment (my other half is scanning them now) just to keep all of the paperwork together and to continue the email chain of correspondence but will ask, them to let me know if they need it by hard copy as well.

Hopefully, this will sort the whole thing out once and for all and then I know exactly where my pension income is up to. I have a shortfall from my UK pension due to moving to Cyprus when we did and have been relying on the 11+ years I paid into the SI Fund during all of those years.

Thanks again for the information you detailed above as it seems pretty much to be the same scenario and process for me, which makes me feel a whole lot better!

Cheers, Shell

Hi - I got a reply pretty quickly and K. Andreas came back just to ask for an official printout of my IBAN details, which I sent back by email this morning.

Again, another fast reply and now my claim is proceeding to be 'examined'.

Fingers crossed everything goes just as smoothly from here on in!

If my first payment arrives as quickly as yours did - I will be a very happy Pensioner indeed :D

Thanks again Maggie XX

Hi Shell

Yes, it sounds like you are very close now. 😁😁😁 The 'examining' doesn't take long at all.

You need 15 years of paying social in Cyprus, you will not receive a Cypriot pension, I'm sure this was already mentioned in your previous posts.
(EU law) the credits you paid here are sent to the UK to top up your UK pension.
I'm in the same boat, paid 13 years social here & receiving nothing. Not enough contributions, however, credits paid in Cyprus topped up UK pension which I have started receiving,

Move forward & enjoy your life your wasting your energy fighting this battle.

It seems that individual cases have different outcomes depending on:
the amount of NI contributions paid in the UK,
the amount of SI contributions paid in Cyprus,
whether the full amount of contributions have been made in each instance to claim a full pension or
whether the minimum amount of contributions have been made in order to qualify for a pension or
whether one already qualifies for one pension and not the other or
whether some contributions are used to top up a pension so it meets the minimum level required in order to qualify and
the final country (ie UK or Cyprus) in which contributions were made.

All these points were raised and discussed when I applied for my UK State Pension and I have yet to meet anyone else who had the same outcome!

From what you have written you did get a result in that (some, if not all of) the Cyprus SI contributions were used to top up your UK State Pension so you didn't lose everything.

Keep going - from my experience the more you contact the various departments, the sooner you will get a result.

Good Luck!

Yesterday I got another email to inform me when they tried to set up the IBAN payment, it is not allowed for SEPA acceptance with my bank, although it says it is in the info online...

I'm assuming they wouldn't attempt to set up any kind of payment transfer account - if there are no monies to come in my direction :|

After much digging and delving followed by a lengthy wait on a phone line, it turns out only certain countries are accepted as SEPA transfers, Cyprus not being one of them.

Tried Starling, the Euro account isn't being offered at the moment.

Monzo, system kept crashing yesterday.

Eventually, sometime around 3pm following a phone call with another bank, success. New bank account created online and I'm just waiting for the access to it so I can send the details to what feels like my new best friend in the Cyprus pensions dept!

Hiya Maggie,

Finally, the new bank account is up and running, IBAN has been received by SSIDS and confirmed it's accepted.

What happens next, do I receive any official notification - can you recall please, and roughly how long it took for you?

I've got another holiday coming up in less than 3 weeks time and am hoping I will know what's happening before then 🀞

I don't really want to be mithering with trying to deal with queries at that time.

Cheers xx

Hi Shell

I was told by Andreas on 6th November my claim was being examined . . . . .and I received my backdated pension from March on 28the November. So, approximately 3 weeks.

Hope this helps.

Maggie B

PS. I think I got a letter a few days later.

That's great, Maggie
Hopefully then, if mine is similar - it could all be sorted and I will know what's happening before we head off to Lanzarote.

I will update when I hear back.

Thanks again.

UPDATE TODAY
I just received 2 separate transfers into my UK bank this morning but I have no idea as to the calculation of them as I haven't had any other emails from Cyprus yet.

A lump sum and a smaller sum, which is just over half the amount of the lump sum.

Did you get only the paperwork afterwards, Maggie B - or was there an email confirmation as well, please?

We're due to fly out on holiday in a few days and I would like to understand where I'm at, before we shoot off.

Either way, it's a nice amount 😁

Cheers xx

Hi Shell

I am absolutely delighted for you. πŸ˜€

I have just checked my Euro Account and the lump sum was paid into my account on 28 November last year. I also found the letter from Social Insurance detailing the payments which was also dated 28th November so it arrived a few days later. Definitely no email confirmation.

Before I received the letter I worked the payment out simply by dividing the amount of lump sum by the months I was due and it worked out very close. Also, the smaller payment could be April's payment as they always pay early for Easter.

Enjoy spending your hard earned Cypriot pension and have a lovely holiday. X

Ah, thanks Maggie.

I sent an email to K. Andreas but not sure when the offices will close for Easter.

My official UK retirement was September last year so I'm looking at 6 to 7 months.

It sounds like I will have to wait for the paperwork.

I will post back when I have the official answer.

If it's the way you say, I've done okay.

We're off to the Canaries later next week so, hopefully the post might have arrived with me before we head to the airport.

Speak again soon xx

So, my paperwork arrived today and I'm still really non the wiser.
Typical Cyprus legalities where emails provide straightforward information but the nitty gritty of it all, goes completely around the houses without saying anything concrete at all.

I've received the arrears as referred to, with payments made before and after the monthly pension increase.

What isn't totally clear is, am I still going to receive a monthly pension from Cyprus...

Has anyone else received this same kind of response who can shed some light on the situation, please?

Thank you!

I've tagged you Maggie - in the hope you see this and can help!

So does my latest response bear any resemblance to the one you received please?
Because I really would like to understand the response I received a couple of days ago - sadly, I don't think I will receive any further replies from Cyprus pensions SID until after I return from my next holiday?

Any info would be much appreciated πŸ‘

Hi Shell

I've just looked out my award letter again and it reads exactly the same as yours. πŸ˜€

So in my opinion, yes you will continue to receive a monthly pension . . . . . . .just like me.
