Hard to find at Paphos supermarkets....
I like cooking and sometimes to get it perfect some ingredients are missing. So I tried to prepare German type Sauerkraut (cabbage) as I got glasses with raw German Sauerkraut from a friend, but very important spices/herbs: Juniper berries and caraway I could not find anywhere in Paphos supermarkets.
Caraway ground I bought always at Lidl, but since 6 month out of stock. Juniper berries I collected in the past in Akamas direct from the trees, but were also finished in the meantime.
Concerning the proper cooked German Sauerkraut however needs these two spices and without it is not the same. Of course you need also onions, nice smoked German ham, bayleaves, vegetable stock, salt, pepper, and a lot of cooking time to get it right. (at least 2 hours and 2 times reheating)
I like to eat the Sauerkraut as it is tradition in my home town Nuremberg together with original Nuremberg sausages and mustard or horseradish.
(the sausages are only available at Lidl however)
Searching a long time in the net I finally found a online shop which had both spices in stock and after a phone call I could arrange a meeting with the owner, lovely Lady Catherine, to get the spices from their home villa and to pay cash for it.
It was for me a lovely drive of one hour through our countryside on side roads to find her place near the Evretou dam and I had a nice chat with the Lady as she stocks a amazing variety of herbs, spices, essential oils and much more...

I've been there a few times and I order on line and have it sent by Akis Express to Peyia. Very nice people and lovely spices and herbs. But indeed a lovely drive and well worth the visit.

Interesting selection, thank you!

Apologies, I mishandled my response. Thank you for this post.

Once a year or so Lidl has cans of German Sauerkraut. I use a pressure cooker to cook it.

Can you remember in which section at Lidl you found it?

Re: Hard to find at Paphos supermarkets....
That reminded me of a steamed treacle pudding I bought when I lived in a bedsit when I was starting out in London. It was my last night before moving to new digs so I had cleaned my room and gone out for a final drink in the local pub. I treated myself to the pudding when I got back. The tin had to be boiled in a saucepan of water. Unfortunately, the booze made me sleepy, so I zonked out on the bed. I woke up in the morning to find the room plastered in treacle pudding. The water had boiled dry and the can just exploded. I guess eventually the meter ran out which turned the electric ring off. But I had to clean the room all over again.

What a shame! Lidl is the only of the large supermarkets I am shopping. However I study their online leaflet each week and perhaps one day I am lucky to see their offer of German Sauerkraut in tins.
