Government ally calls out EAC for cheating on subsidised bills

Post by Paphos Life »

President Nikos Christodoulides was on Monday urged by one of his government allies to get the state-run power utility to refund people in the next batch of electricity bills to go out, claiming that the Electricity Authority (EAC) had ‘cheated’ customers out of the subsidy from May to June. In

I wish that this state run company which still has a monopoly in all aspects of power and its generation would modernise its outdated and inefficient systems. As they effectively pass on every conceivable cost on to customers, it should stick in its customers throats if it has been failing to pass on customer's Govt subsidies.
Disgraceful.

Yes, and there seems to be no concerted, meaningful protest from local people about such things, so no improvement. Another example is chaotic planning of roadworks, harming retailers and the public at large. Or the multi floor Korantina building that has marred the skyline of Kato Paphos. So many things like this. The locales just accept it.

ok..

so this was a goverment subsidy that the EAC makes no profit on.. it is similar to VAT.

the subsidy was given on the basis of the date the invoiced was raised ... not the dates of supply... it was the same when the subsidy was introduced.. nothing to do with when the electricty was consumed.. everthing to do with when the invoice was raised.

no one complained when the subsidy was intoduced on energy consumed before the intoduction of the subsidy.. but now people feel hard done by when the same principle has been used on its demise.

not sure as go why passing on a state subsidy (for which the eac did not benefit) should raise such vitriol..

i'm not a fan of the EAC but, like the changes in VAT on bills during the past few years, the introduction and demise of this goverment subsidy is anything other than a state dictate.. its nothing to do with the EAC systems..

Maybe they didn't stand to gain directly from the Govt subsidy, but surely they should have passed it on to consumers -if it was due to them? The high price of electricity in Cyprus is something which affects many consumers. Other than those with large PV systems installed.

Its high time the EAC modernised the whole way that it generates and distributes electricity, otherwise however much renewable electricity from PV is produced, it won't be capable of using it all in the national grid.

Why do you think they didnt pass it on?.. it was a goverment subsidy that reduced the consumer bill amount and which the EAC then had a credit.. it really was quite simple.

And you appear to be trying to conflate different issues.. tying a perceived injustice for which their is no justification to broader issues..

its not the generation of electricty or the distribution (to a large extent) its the storage of energy from renewables that needs to be addressed.. And that needs a lot of money.. money which the EAC does not have..

I thought the same thing when people were complaining that they were cheated. Surely they had to apply the same method at the end as they did at the start. Yes, some people were unlucky now to get an invoice just after the subsidy ended, but others were lucked to be invoiced just after it started.

The policy should have specified billing periods rather than actual months, given that you never know when the EAC will read your meter.
