Baggage size conundrum

Hi there

Can anybody help me with the exact definition of a walk on bag i.e the type that you now have to place under your seat?? when flying with easyJet

The definition of a small bag with Easy-jet) is of 45cm x36cm x 20cm- and my compact suitcase with wheels and that I used to take on board (and place in the overhead locker), is 50cm x 33cm x 20cm so it is now technically 5cms too tall ?

So, I decided that maybe the best option is to do away with a hard case (or similar) altogether, and take on board a small rucksack and so measuring the unfolded or flattened out backpack to take the precise measurements to meet the above requirements,..... here is my dilemma:

I have been viewing and also measuring various rucksacks in Paphos and some have extra side or front pockets- which when "expanded" would increase
the overall depth and perhaps width of the actual rucksack when fully "loaded", so can I be penalised if for example the expanded bag is too wide (if that makes sense) given this scenario.

I appreciate that there are these measuring contraptions at the airport that you can drop your case in to see if it is within these fixed limits- but bearing in mind a rucksack is squashable" and is not a rigid structure- does anyone know how strict these rulings are, as I do not want to incur any additional charges

Any ideas or suggestions please ? Thanks in advance. .

We've not used EJ since 2021, but before then we never had our bag checked for weight or size

We travelled to UK with Easy Jet yesterday, people were being asked to fit their bag in the metal box if they could squeeze it in, i.e. if they had a soft beg that stretched to a bigger size but as it was not full they could squash it to a small enough size, then they were allowed to proceed, if the bag could not be forced into the box then they were being charged, I think it was 45 Euro per bag, we saw at least 5 people charged. Then they were rechecking at the gate in case people had checked in a suitcase but kept their hand baggage hidden, we saw at least 2 people charged at the gate.
We were lucky, I think we would often have been caught out but luckily last night we were OK.

Hi Gary that's really helpful- because one of baggage specialists shops in Paphos said her son travelled to Poland recently with Ryanair and was not even checked and he had a larger size rucksack... so he may well have been lucky as It's not so much the height of the bag but the added width or depth if these extra "pockets" are stuffed with harder materials such a books or even a small plastic box that may contain personal items.

I will have to ensure that the rigid stuff goes in the main suitcase (hold) and just ensure that squashable type items can go in other pocket compartments I paid £60 x 2 for my 23kg allowance main cargo hold suitcase- The flights in total were £248.97 so in percentage terms the baggage costs are roughly about 48% (percent) of the Total cost

I have also heard that some crafty individuals often use their duty free bags to put extra stuff in there, which are not checked (as far as I aware and don't count towards your ("smaller carry on bag")free allowance

Anyway thanks for the info and at least I am better informed now of the potential risks and costs!!!!!!

We flew Bristol to Spain 2 weeks ago. Check in online. Bag drop is self service. Before boarding the only esasyJet staff we saw was at the gate to check out passport

I had to go to funeral in February. I took my wife's 20 ltr rucksack with me as I thought my 25 ltr would be too big for Ryan airs measurements.
I noticed that people who went through before me had rucksacks as big as my own 25ltr if not bigger go through without a problem. However those that had a ruck sack and another type of shoulder bag had to pay 70 euros, those with wheelies also if they had not paid the 25 euro fee for them to be put up in the luggage bins, those that had paid 25 euros got priority boarding, and it was great as the bins had plenty of space for me to put my rucksack instead of having it in front of my feet.
