Paphos lawyers on indefinite strike

Post by memory man »

The Paphos bar association has called for its members to go on an indefinite strike, protesting the new security measures implemented at the Paphos courthouse.

In a letter they sent to the minister of justice and public order, Stefi Drakou, the Paphos bar association and its members put forth their request for an end to the checking of lawyers upon entering the Paphos District Court.

This lawyers have called the measure, which has been in effect for one-and-a-half months, “unnecessary and pointless”, claiming that though it was put in place for security reasons there has never been an issue of security in the courts area.

The Paphos bar association added that the latest pandemic surge, along with the measures followed for one-and-a-half months, would exacerbate an already bad situation and should not go unnoticed.

Calling the checks “a humiliation” as its members are “treated almost like criminals”, the association said the measure prevents them from exercising their profession as officers of justice.

“The body of lawyers of Paphos does not accept the exercise of control and daily humiliation during the execution of its work,” the Bar Association of Paphos said in its letter, calling on its members to go on strike as of Monday, and saying its 400 members will consider taking further measures in case the humiliating measure continues.

Life would be better without lawyers! They are parasitic and greedy.

That's a massively sweeping statement to make. No, they are not all parasitic and greedy. The few times I have needed a lawyer they were a pleasure to work with. Fast, efficient and I thought the fees were very reasonable.

Just think of the number of lawyers in the Cyprus parliament, civil service and government.
