Since 2013 most Cyprus banks have been turning in losses; only in very recent years have they turned the corner.
For all kinds of reasons we need a healthy, banking system where banks make profits. Banks are no more charitable institutions than any other commercial enterprise and they have shareholders to answer to. Banks don't earn brownie points from handing all their profits back to customers. That's an unrealistic expectation, why else are they in business if not to make a profit?
Profits for q3 2021 for the likes of Hellenic and BoC were around €20m as I recall which in the scale of things is peanuts, and makes reinvestment tricky at best. To that in context, the monthly wage bill Chelsea Football club may or may not be able to pay at the end of the month, is estimated at £28m.
We have just had our gas tank filled up this morning. It was quite expensive at just over 200 euros . That is certainly the most we have ever paid. But we need to keep warm
