They are entitled to do that to UK citizens residing in the north, but it strikes me as very petty. Does the ROC impose restrictions on any other non EU countries nationals like this? Thats assuming they are already legal residents of the North.
I suppose when this happens the Turkish authorities may retaliate by imposing restrictions on UK citizens who reside in the ROC who may want to visit. As some of us do...

It strikes you as very petty, what a shame, I hope you never have someone force you out of your property at gun point, so foreigners can move in and enjoy something on the cheap..... The north is an illegal fiefdom recognised only by the occupier Turkey and a few wind up merchants on here..

It was previously highlighted as a strong possibility after Brexit so am not sure many people will be that surprised.

For those with a holiday home in the ROC - that also visit the north - then it's a timely reminder that
time spent there will be counted in the overall 90-day limit. Also highlighting the potential consequences
of overstaying in general for UK visitors in the last paragraph is worth noting.

I would doubt there would be retaliation the other way due to the current financial situation in the north and
as it is a consequence of the UK leaving the EU.

Regardless of this - given the current situation in relation to Varosha, the north's stance re a solution, drilling etc etc
then personally I don't think the ROC has been petty, but rather too restrained in general.

The last time we visited the north all we where asked for is our passport and safe pass.Is this still the case.Thanks.

We know a few people who live in the north but another has moved there from the Republic just last week.
They say they still have residency papers for the south for almost 5 more years so hope it won't be an issue for them.
I guess it all depends on the number of times they will cross over but from one who knows the postal service in the north, I have my suspicions they will be crossing south to a post office box....

What happens now as a result of the invasion and in Varosha is really a matter which should be determined by all Cypriots by some form of agreement. Britain gave the island of Cyprus its independence in 1960.
What the British and the British forces did was to offer a safe haven for Greek Cypriots fleeing from the north of Cyprus as a result on the Turkish invasion.
Also there was a major airlift from Akrotiri for both British residents and Greek Cypriots wishing to leave the island for the safety of the UK immediately after the invasion. The British forces also built temporary tented camps to accommodate a large number of Greek Cypriot refugees from the north of the island who fled south...

The majority of UK citizens who voted, choose to restrict their freedoms in this regard. The whole island of Cyprus is in the EU.

Britain gave the island of Cyprus its independence in 1960.

There is little credit in returning what it had no right to take away in the first place.

The UK was/is a guarantor of Cyprus by their own agreement and the assistance given, whilst no doubt welcomed, should be viewed in that light.
The question as to whether they could have done more, possibly reducing the need for such assistance, has been discussed endlessly.

Whilst it may well be inconvenient for those UK nationals who have choosen to live in the north - living in an occupied territory has consequences.

I think this is getting way off course though and I'm pretty sure that the OP was only intended to be helpful.

We are where we are Dee and UK nationals, regardless of location, have to deal with the consequences or otherwise of our own decisions.

You sure Steve? I thought is was only the Republic which is in the EU. The North is surely not recognised by anyone other than Turkey?

As far as the EU is concerned the Whole of the Republic of Cyprus is in the EU,

Despite joining the EU as a de facto divided island, the whole of Cyprus is EU territory. Turkish Cypriots who have, or are eligible for, EU travel documents are EU citizens. EU law is suspended in areas where the Cypriot government (Government of the Republic) does not exercise effective control.
