Tourism industry left reeling as Cyprus moves into ECDC Red Category..

Post by trevnhil »

Tourism industry professionals were left reeling on Saturday after
Cyprus was placed in the Red category by the European Centre of
Disease Control (ECDC) because of a surge in coronavirus
infections in the past couple of weeks.

I wouldn't say it is going wild. It is spreading in the unvaccinated youth.

Yes, the 18-30yr olds, who have not come forward in numbers to take up the Govt offer to be vaccinated. Plus a section of anti vaxers in the population. Coupled with a reluctance to wear masks and a need to socialise in big groups.
Its very sad for the rest of us especially those of us who were planning to go away. Also the last thing that all those who rely on the hotel and tourist industry for their jobs wanted. And potentially disastrous for hotels, and the catering and hospitality sector.
And Cyprus is likely to enter the red zone. So no flights again.

89 or more new positive cases tomorrow and our 14 day average per 100k will be dark red again. Depressing since it was only 13 June that we were rapidly approaching green. It took us a month of low numbers to get from previous dark red ranking to nearly green. Hard to imagine that we will see many tourists coming on that basis.

Personally I am not too bothered by the increased figures. When you consider that the testing pool is made up almost entirely of unvaccinated people now, it is inevitable that the figures will rise, especially the positivity rate.

The key figures, as always, are the hospital stats and death rate. At the moment they are pretty good, and the death rate is virtually zero.

In August, when the free tests are abolished, it will be interesting to see what happens. Will the unvaccinated bite the bullet and go and get their jabs?

I saw last week that 126k cases per day was recorded in the UK on the 30th January, and the same number on the 30th June, the difference of deaths was 1200 in January to 14 in June.

The figure on 30th June was 26068 not 126k. On 30th January it was 23275.

I think that’s probably the case Dominic, it’s probably the core group left unvaccinated either though choice or because the younger age groups have had less time to have vaccines or less time elapsed to protect them, unlike those of us who are older.

My concern is for those holding our hope that there will be a significant influx of tourists in the later part of the summer, particularly from the U.K., to save their business. Many are hoping that the proposal to drop quarantine on return to the U.K. from amber countries does happen. If the U.K. authorities look at our data and decide to move Cyprus to red, then that’s unlikely to happen.

The dropping of free tests may make a difference, hitting peop in the pocket often makes a difference.

If they drop the free tests 1ST August then there is no way to know if the country is red amber or green for travel that is what the travel people argued for before the summer started if they did not do so many test we would have been in the green for the summer. We would depend on hospitalisation as to how to determine travel in or out.

From the information I have read PCR and Rapid Antigen Tests are recorded on a central database so regardless of whether the government test sites charge those who are no longer eligible for free tests from 01 August, there will still be daily updates on the situation.

This link gives Sunday's statistics: https://cyprus-mail.com/2021/07/04/coro ... on-sunday/

The risk is that people who will have to pay for the test from 01 August may decide not to bother and risk a fine.

Uncle D. The deaths on 30 Jan 1200 and on 30 June 14. I think that you have put an extra 1 in front of 26 as your post states 126k and it should be 26k.
