I was shocked when I watched that video about the proportions of the huge fire at Kamares village some days ago. At the end of the film one can see how many homeowners were ever so lucky that the fire could be hold just before their villas....
Just reminded me fleeing my villa at Neo Chorion ca 30 years ago when a massive fire front appeared with terrible noise, wind and smell of smoke.
It was only time to find the passports, running to the car and leave the area. From a distance we watched the efforts of the fire fighters which luckily could stop the fire just meters before it reached the property. What a horrible situation it was.... As I was many times away with my car, I decided to buy my wife a second car that she could flee the area in case of another fire.

I used to live in Zelemenos in one of the houses which was near the far top edge of the ravine. Those houses were spared, though the fire from the ravine came very close indeed. My heart goes out to the poor folks living on the Karmi/Kamares side.
The video is quite shocking as to the fires ferocity.
The fire would have been even more devestating, had the fire services from places as far away as Limassol not reacted quickly, also with aerial help from 9 helicopters, which came from everywhere, all equipped with water buckets, inc 2 which came from the British base at Akrotiri to assist. Also I'm told that there was also a wonderful effort from Kamares residents who immediately started fighting the blaze with hoses and buckets of water, until the emergency services arrived.
I hope that all people will be very careful not to start fires by dropping cig ends, or leaving any glass bottles any where in the countryside where everything is tinder dry.

The properties shown are opposite our Villa across the valley.
Our villa is shown at the end of the video.
Our villa was only saved because of the fire service who did a magnificent job and the vigilance of all our neighbours who used their garden hoses to help extinguish the fires engulfing our property. We were in Paphos and prevented from getting to our property by the police.
Yesterday we reported a fire in our street. The fire service came and stayed overnight. This morning they were putting out another fire.
We were very lucky.
