Two Water bills?

Post by josef k »

I have happily been paying water bills for 19 years now, firstly in Paphos and now in Emba.

For the first time I have received two water bills, the regular one from the Community council, and simultaneously one from the Sewerage Board to cover 2019 and 2020. This latter one does not state it is a water bill, but it refers to meter readings and they align with my water meter, so it must be a water bill. It is definitely not the annual sewerage bill.

I have already paid for water used in 2019 and 2020 to the community council, and thought that was it, and don't understand why the Sewerage Board are now billing me for the same water. Before I pop in to the Sewerage Board after lockdown to ask the question, I thought I had better check with you good people in case I am missing the obvious.

Has anybody else received such bills? Can anyone explain why?

In the uk, I think they charged the sewerage part as a percentage of water through the meter ( so much in....so much out) perhaps they are doing the same.

Perhaps best to phone SAPA on 26818202 as earlier in the year they were not allowing visits to the office by the general public when I had a query.

I am expecting the bill from SAPA this month for 2019 and 2020 and yes the water meter number is the reference and the amount due is based on the water used during that period (usually broken down into quarters).

Its a bill for sewerage but references the water meter readings, I guess thats how they work our your sewerage bill based on water used. I have just had ours and paid it.

If in doubt just call them and they will explain. 8-)
I started off with nothing and have most of it left !

I only get an annual bill for sewerage around Christmas time. I thought that the charge was based on the number of bedrooms.

It appears to differ across the island and across the different Water and Sewage Boards. Locally and for the first time since we took ownership in 2003, we have received from the Sewerage Board of Kokkinochoria, invoices for payment of an annual Sewerage charge, bearing in mind we have no connection to the sewer pipe itself, as we are on a septic tank system. We have the title deeds at 50% share each for my wife and myself.
The Invoices are based on the Land Registry IPT value of the property, not on bedrooms, number of people or water consumption but 0.4% of the Government valuation.

Although you say you are not connected to the Sewer System, would I be right in saying you could be if you paid for pipes into the roadway ?

Always had sewerage bills since 2004 based on water consumption in Chloraka and Geroskipou and both complexes have septic tanks.

Yes Trev we could connect if it was practical to do so.
The main sewer line which is a 7" pipe was dug in some 8 years ago, we have not chosen to connect as our houses are below the level of the road and the main sewer which runs down below the centre of it. We would require some sort of macerator and pump system to move the waste about 4 metres up and plop into the sewer.
Others locally are challenging payment for a system that is impractical and that they may not be able to afford.

Sewage? we are still on Septic Tanks... but we have no problems with them, ours in fact still have the wood seals in place, the house is well over 20 years old so they have never needed emptying, no water fees or pipe work. I hope it stays that way.

I believe this is why you and others are getting a sewage bill. The council have provided the main sewer in the road and they expect you and others to connect up to it.
But as you point out the main sewer is higher than your pipes in the ground..
I hope you can find a solution with the council, but it will be a hard thing to do.. Good Luck..

When I queried the fact that each complex has a septic tank I was told payments were being taken to fund the infrastructure of the sewerage system.

My current complex is in the process of being linked up to the sewerage system, plans and costings have been made, now it is up to the owners to produce the funds.
