Thankyou again galexinda.. At the two hospitals I use it is quite difficult to get in to just see anyone. But I will bear in mind what you say.. I was thinking of getting a splint, and indeed tried one of pull on type wrist sleeves last night.. I took it off halfway through the night, it felt as though my wrist was on fire.

Perhaps because I used to work in a medical climate I'm not too shy about asking questions, but at the end of the day it is your body and you are entitled if not expected to ask questions - unlike a few years ago when no one would dream of querying what the doctor told them!
I have a hard splint which encloses most of the hand, thumb, wrist and forearm (in order to specifically immobilise the base of the thumb where it articulates with the wrist) and was told to wear it at rest for a maximum of 3-4 hours per day. I also have a more flexible splint which covers the metacarpals and wrist and allows me to use my fingers and provides some support to the thumb joint and I use this if I go supermarket shopping etc.
However, it is very important to get the right mix between resting and exercise - for me it is tempting to try not to use the thumb area because it is so painful and yet I must use the hand so the other bits and pieces keep working! Different problem to your carpal tunnel syndrome, but still jolly inconvenient and sometimes very painful.

Fortunately I am it would appear in the very early stages of this affliction, and mainly only have pins and needles in my fingers. I do also get 'electric shocks' (my terminology) in my left wrist. So I will wait to see what the next step is when I see my consultant.. I assume he will refer me to a Neurological Surgeon .
