In theory it is always good. But how many actually do self isolate for 100% of the time.. Certainly not all.. They need to get out to buy food and drink

The fun hasn't even started yet - The UK Furlough scheme has now been extended to April so the government know this is not a short term problem - If you look on the internet vaccine calculator the average joe on the street in the UK is not going to get vaccinated until June or July because there are so many priority cases that come first and that's if all goes to plan - I can imagine that if things do start to improve somewhat then you will not be allowed in to Cyprus without proof of vaccination and that is assuming that things don't get any worse in Cyprus - I would say that you can write off another holiday season in Cyprus without a doubt and can the country withstand this ?

Im not the sharpest pencil in the box, but if the UK vaccinated one million people a week, which I doubt very much they are in a position to carry this out,, then assuming you need at least two injections each, by my calculations it would be over two years, to do everyone or I'm I way out on my maths?

WHL - I am sure you are absolutely correct - I think the June or July date is when they foresee that the vulnerable are vaccinated by and June/July onwards is when the ordinary joes start to be considered for vaccination and if your calculations are correct then you can probably double that timescale to allow for cock ups in vaccine supply People becoming ill because of the vaccine etc

Cyprus could easily do what other countries have in the past, takeover contracts in empty hotels, force isolation at traveller expense in these hotels and therefore control it.

Many advocated the UK doing that at Heathrow with all the empty hotels, yet the UK did NO isolation and NO control over travellers at all. It is estimated that 25,000 infected travellers entered Heathrow alone, from March to July.

Just read this on FB:

Government announcement

Passengers from the United Kingdom are in state quarantine for a period of 7 days
Taking into account the data obtained regarding the new strain of SARS-CoV-2 virus and in an effort to ensure Public Health for precautionary reasons and until further clarification by the scientific community, for those arriving at Larnaca Airports and Parnafu Airports from today, 21 December 2020, at 6 pm, the following shall apply:
Passengers will undergo a laboratory test upon arrival at the Airport.
All passengers arriving from the United Kingdom will be transferred to Republic hotels for a mandatory 7-day self-restraint. People under the age of 18 will be able to self-limit at home. However, it is possible for them to remain restricted in hotels if they travel with their parents / guardians or, if they cannot, do self-restraint at home.
On the 7th day, they will undergo a laboratory test again and those who have a negative result, will continue their self-limitation at home for 3 additional days (total of restraint days: 10).
On the 10th day and as long as there are no symptoms, the people will be released automatically. In case of symptoms, they should contact their Personal Physician for further medical guidance.
It is noted that the costs for transportation and accommodation in hotels are borne by the State.
At the same time, for evaluation and investigation purposes, those who have arrived from the United Kingdom last week and have been diagnosed positive in the sampling tests performed, the samples will be forwarded to the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics for evaluation of the presence of this mutant.
The Scientific Advisory Committee on Coronavirus, in consultation with the relevant mechanisms of the European Union, is closely following the developments and any new recommendation / suggestion may change the above regulations, which will be announced immediately.

All UK arrivals will be taken to state allocated and sponsored quarantine hotels for seven days, the health ministry announced on Monday morning.

The measures is in effect from 6pm Monday.

The statement also detailed that those under the age of 18 may self-isolate at home instead but hotels will be available to them if required – i.e., if they travelled with their parents, for example.

After seven days, those in the hotels will be required to take another PCR test and if the result is negative then they can self-isolate at home for another three days, raising the total period of self-isolation to ten days.

The health ministry confirmed that if the test taken on the seventh day is positive, the person will be treated as any other positive case and as such will be required to self-isolate at home for two weeks.

On the tenth day, as long as they have no symptoms, people can exit self-isolation. If people are symptomatic they must contact their personal doctor for further guidance.

Passengers will also have to take a PCR test upon arrival at the airport.

No more details were immediately available but further clarifications are expected throughout the day.
