No wonder that these trees needed cutting down as a poplar wants at least 400 mm of rain in summer, when they grow and the roots have to reach groundwater level. Both is not possible in Paphos climate and to plant that trees was wrong in the first place. Yes, they grow fast in the beginning but then when the conditions are wrong they get sick and infested by worms etc. and need to be removed. Concerning the oleander to cut very low makes also sense as they needed all the time pruning not to interfere the road traffic and will grow much nicer in the future.
So in my opinion all the fuss for nothing....
