Doesn't seem stiffer, does it? According to the article, 60 in a 50 would be a fine of just €10 as 60 is less that 30% above the limit so that's €1 per km over the speed limit.

I just wonder if the media have, as often, made a printing error & it should be €10 and not €1

Don't think so! The original proposal about increased fines for all these dangerous driving offences that was published were that they had been recommended to be much higher, €300 for most offences and higher penalties proportionate to the excess speed that a driver was clocked as traveling particularly when committed in a restricted speed area.

As usual when members of the house of representatives met to vote, it seems the proposals got watered down.

Driving at 60 in a 50 limit will not incur a fine, just as it doesn't today. Nowhere does it say that the current 20% allowance is being scrapped. Currently doing 120 on the highway does not incur a fine, while 121 incurs a €21 fine.

I have never seen that! But in practice the police have usually allowed a margin for error! I thought that it was about 10%?

I have never seen that ruling about up to 120 being OK. But I have bee told about it many times and also by someone giving driving lessons. But as always the risk is on your own shoulders

At least once a week I pass police with radar guns on the highway. My cruise control is usually set (weather permitting) at 120 kph. I have never been pulled over. Similarly I set it to 78 in a 65 limit. No problem.

Because the LEGAL maximum permitted speed is 65mph ((100kpm) NOT 78mph (125kph)

The max speed is 100, where do you get 120

I have been given a ticket for doing 110, all this 120 before you get a ticket is an urban myth.

It may well be an urban Myth.. And it certainly above the stated speed limit... But it is rare to hear of anyone being fined for doing just under 120 on the motorway ..

I set mine at 116 KPH and been through lots of speed traps and never been stopped. It's as Kansas said, the police allow up to 120 according to my Cypriot relations that's why you see most Cypriots going over the speed limit, especially commercial vehicles.

Many countries do that, go the UAE the speed limit is 120KPH but you dont get a ticket until you reach 146KPH and Egypt is the same.

I suspect that is one of the main reasons why the serous injury/death rate is so high in those countries!
