Dates banks are closed over Easter and other information

Post by galexinda »

According to a Central Bank of Cyprus announcement last week, all banks in Cyprus will close on Thursday April 16th and re-open on Wednesday 22nd April 2020.

Specifically the banks will be closed:

Friday, April 17th (Good Friday)
Monday, April 20th (Easter Monday)
Tuesday, April 21st (Easter Tuesday)

Thinking of heading to the bank? Avoid a wasted journey:

The Bank Of Cyprus announced earlier this week that it will be temporarily closing some branches, on a rotating basis, in order to safeguard the public's health as effectively as possible. You can check if your local branch will close in the link in the article.

Similarly, the Hellenic Bank has also closed some branches and you can view the list of open branches and current restrictions in the link to the article.

In addition some bank branches will only be open for customers who are in vulnerable/at-risk groups during specific banking hours.

All banks have advised that, where possible, clients use online/mobile banking and restrict visits to branches.

Wonder why bank tellers are more vulnerable than say supermarket check out staff? Wearing masks, disposable gloves and sometimes behind perspex screens? Should minimise the risk!
Also banks are only open for virtually half days! And many of their customers will be using the ATM. It’s those who don’t have bank cards-who will be penalised.

I expect someone will post in support of the banks.

Thank you for the information.

Normally at Easter, supermarkets also close.

Does anyone know if that's the case this year?

The three banks I use on a regular basis have all facilitated the process of banking in recent days by offering debit cards, opening on-line accounts, set times for those over 60 years of age, vulnerable etc which is the way the trend of banking in Cyprus was being promoted before the onset of Coronavirus.

In reply to Dee's post, the bank may be open for physical access for a limited weekday time, but access to the branch by phone is for the full working hours (as evidenced by phone calls and emails I have been receiving updating me on the respective services and queries I have) and if you do have on-line banking then for many services it is 24/7.

With regards to personal safety - I would like to think everyone else is taking the same level of precautions I am.

I recently had a problem paying an invoice of a Nicosia company. The problem appeared to be in a modification to a software, discovered and corrected after the third physical visit to the bank, all during the shutdown. This meant my having to drive an estimated 140 km. I was stopped twice by the police on the way in to the first visit, but was not stopped at all or even saw a control while motoring to the second and third visits. The route taken covered rural, suburban and urban areas.

My bank is Alpha. In recent months I have had letters from them informing me of their charges for performing various things in bank which used to be free and others informing of the diminishing amount of interest now paid on deposit accounts.

But nothing about their opening times over Easter period. Nothing about them closing any of their 3 branches in Paphos.Does anyone belong to this Bank and know what they plan to do over Easter? I haven’t been inside my bank recently, just to the ATM.

I have an account at Alpha - had a phone call from the Deputy Manager earlier in the week informing me of the special arrangements for 60+ customers.

From the original post the dates are given for the closing times of all banks over the Easter period.

Yes, I know that banks close on all Bank Holidays and at Easter they usually close for nearly a week...
Bur what banking hours do Alpha have for the over 60’ s on a normal working day ? That would be very useful.
I don't have my branch telephone no.
Thanks for any useful help on this.
