President denies supermarkets, shops to close

Post by memory man »

resident Nicos Aanastasiades on Friday rejected as unfounded rumours that the new measures he is due to announce later this evening to contain the spread of coronavirus provide for the closure of supermarkets, shops and companies.

“I have been informed of an intense rumour that the measures I plan to announce apparently include the closure of supermarkets, shops or other kinds of companies. This is totally untrue. Therefore the panic being caused is totally unnecessary,” he said on Twitter.

The president is due to give a televised address this evening and is expected to announce additional measures.

I get the impression that the some of population are feeling panic mode! This was particularly noticeable in the 2 shops I visited this morning .Some young and presumably healthy adults, particularly Cypriots, are wearing various kinds of face masks today. One or two persons wearing gloves. I’m glad to read the presidents denial that he is NOT planning to close shops and supermarkets as some people seemed to be panic buying.

Lots of bars of Dettol soap bars and other Dettol products in Chloraka Papantoniou. Busy, but I don't normally go shopping on a Friday so don't know if it was more busy than usual. All shelves well stocked. I did use an antibacterial wipe to clean my purse and shopping bag before I left the shop.

Maybe one of these papers will give a report soon after the President has finished:

Just called in Lidl for some milk and it looked like it had been ransacked.

One thing to be wary of is vegetable bags, because in order to open them my default action is to lick my fingers first...

Looking on fb feeds many people are in a panic mode calling for a full lockdown closing all border including the airports
Whatever anybody thinks of dear old Nic he’s trying to stop mass hysteria whether he’ll succeed is another matter 😳

I was in Papa’s, Chloraka, this afternoon. It was very busy. People with trollies packed high with all sorts of goods, including multiples of the basics like flour, sugar, tins, loo rolls, diapers and so on. I said to one Cypriot lady, no need to panic, the President has spoken to confirm that supermarkets and pharmacies will not close. Oh yes they will she said. You will see he speaks on TV tonight at 8.20.
It will make everyones life here more difficult if people are panicking..I hope the President will tell everyone that shops won’t be closing..

Must admit I had a chuckle when I read this heading as quite often it means the opposite - we shall see!

If the hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and gyms are shut down who will pay the staff? Most of these people live week to week so could be troublesome times ahead.

Went shopping in Paphos this morning.

Quite quiet, first went to Super Home Market, where there were about four customers.

Then went to AlphaMega. Aside from soap dispensers there was no sign of any panic buying,

Finally went to Lidl. Shelves pretty well stocked, (breaded ham on offer!) and an average crowd in.

No sign of loaded trollies-in Paps this morning either. Neither were shelves empty, though some items had obviously taken a bit of a hit.. Hopefully panic now over!
