The deed is done and, my goodness, we are so happy that we have bitten the bullet. In the end we had a 14 Kw convector log burner installed in our existing fireplace. There was much angle-grinding and drilling and so forth to make sure the stove actually fitted perfectly. The guys who installed it worked from nine-thirty in the morning until six in the evening. After they left we lit it and were slightly underwhelmed by the heat output. But our chimney was not warm and it was a first run.
This morning we lit the fire and determined to run it all day. By lunchtime the house was toasty warm and so it has remained all day and evening. Gosh ... what a difference it has made to our bungalow. We are warm and relaxed and all that is required is that we keep an eye on things. We went out for a couple of hours this afternoon, as we do when our cleaners are working. We put a couple of extra logs on the fire and it was still running sweetly when we returned.
We should have done this years ago. Brilliant.

Re: Log burner query ...
Emissions are a problem with any heating but log burners are high on this and the UK are looking into this problem (Sky news this week) there is a shop selling pellet burners although I have never been inside, it is down the harbor road on the left-hand side towards the sea,the shop is called ''Pellet House''click link below.
I did once buy two panel heaters off a chap in Peyia he had gone over to the pellet system, he said the fire was clean and the heat given off was good, personally, I will stay with my log effect fitted gas fire, very happy with that but I live in a small home, no mess either. On Off simples no waste.
Nice presentation Lloyd

Re: Log burner query ...
I am a Log Burner user as well.
I used to be able to source and cut as much Eucalyptus as i needed for my own use. Leave it for 2 years to dry and it was brilliant, fairly slow burning and gave great heat. Can't be bothered making the effort any more and so buy in my wood from a local wood yard. They import from Bulgaria and I go for the Oak or Beech. The company also issue me with a Ministry of Agriculture/Forestry Licence in order to prove I purchased the wood from an authorised source for my own consumption. Anyone else get a License such as I describe with their delivery?

Re: Log burner query ...
There is a move afoot in the UK to ban wood burners and this will surely spread to the whole of the EU. For 19 years, we complemented our heating with a closed wood burner in the living room. Two years ago, we had the room repainted (it was filthy from the burner, even though it was closed) and, since then, it has not been used; the cleanliness is remarkable and we don't waste time and money on maintenance and dealing with wood. My advice: no wood burner but, if you must, make sure it conforms to future regulations, such as will be implemented in the UK shortly.
Re: Log burner query ...
Dev as I posted. Wood burners in the UK at least maybe in time be outlawed, also remember wood to burn may become harder to find and be very expensive in time on Cyprus. Just a thought NOT a statement.

Part of Sky News this week.
The current trend for wood-burning stoves could come to a sudden end if proposals to clean up the environment come into force.
The government is being forced to publish its Clean Air Strategy under EU rules, although the Environment Secretary Michael Gove has indicated that any measures included will continue after Brexit.
The aim is to reduce the amount of particulate matter in the atmosphere. The tiny particles can be inhaled and lead to heart disease, strokes and lung cancer.
It is hoped to halve by 2025 the number of people living in areas where particulate matter exceeds safe levels set by the World Health Organisation.
The proposals would mean that only cleaner fuels and stoves will be sold for domestic heating, curbing polluting smoke and soot, under plans being put out for consultation.
And councils will be given new powers to bring in "clean air zones" to tackle poor air from sources such as wood burners, for example limiting what people can burn or bringing in "no-burn days", and from diesel-powered machinery.
Officials say almost two-fifths (38%) of particulate matter comes from domestic wood burners and open fires, which just 7.5% of homes have.
