Sirens next week

Post by Paphos Life »

FOR THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW
The Republic of Cyprus will mark the 45th anniversary of the coup against Archbishop Makarios with sirens next Monday the 15th July 2019. Like every year, sirens will sound in every district at 8:20am, the time the coup began.

Then on Saturday, July 20th 2019, the sirens will again be activated this time at 5:30am, the time the Turkish invasion started.

Heavily armed Turkish forces landed on the northern coast of Kyrenia at dawn on July 20, 1974, five days after the government of the late Archbishop Makarios was toppled by a military coup engineered by the military junta then ruling Greece. In a two-phase invasion and despite repeated calls by the UN Security Council, Turkey occupied 37% of the sovereign territory of Cyprus.

Cyprus will pay tribute to those killed during the invasion and those still missing, with memorials and other events in the government controlled areas of the Republic.

The Cyprus Civil Defence Force will activate the sirens of the Public Warning System, which are installed in all areas of the Republic.
There is no cause for alarm.

I wonder if the Chloraka siren will work this year - only faintly heard one from the harbour region last year. Quite a chilling moment when you do hear it.

I've always thought along the lines of, if there was another invasion
the perfect time would be when the sirens go off annualy...…….. nobody would
pay attention. :o :o :o

I used to live near Broadmoor. They tested the sirens every monday at 10AM. I always thought that would be the perfect time to escape too...

The sirens even made it into popular culture, in the Member's song: "Sound of the Suburbs".

10-OClock, Broadmoor sirens driving me mad...

I lived in Finchampstead for 17 years ( about 4 miles from Broadmoor) and worked there briefly. The only other time the sirens went off was when a patient escaped, then the whole place, including surrounding areas went into lockdown! 😀😀

I used to be quite impressed that we could hear the sirens from Camberley, until I realised that they actually had several sirens dotted around the area, and I was hearing the one in Camberley Town Centre.

Or perhaps she’s withdrawn herself as she isn’t showing in the members list 🤷🏼‍♂️

Look at the topic campaign to promote Paphos as a domestic tourism destination.
