Does anybody know the full story behind this because on the face of this article I find it embarrasing in the extreme.

In what way !!embarrasing
Re: Brit suspected of conning hotel escapes extradition because of kids' health
So on the one hand UK is up in arms about the lady who has admitted to driving on the wrong side of the road and killing a motor cyclist before claiming diplomatic immunity and running away and refusing to returning to the UK to face justice, together with all the publicity surrounding that situation and now this. Ranks of double standards to me. If you want to avoid extradition from the UK just claim your kids are ill.
Having said all this I think the parties in Cyprus were a bit naive and left themselves a bit open to exploitation, but before anyone jumps on me, that is no excuse for the Brit's actions.

I am horrified at how badly that Englishman behaved cheating a hotel owner who showed him good will. Even if that was somewhat naive in hindsight. But that is a very strange decision which the British court came to, But I wonder if it could be appealed ?

Unfortunately Con men and women, are very very convincing, so I can understand how the hotel owner was scammed.

A similar thing happened in our village where one of the locals went "Guarantor" for 10,000 Cypriot Pounds to a Brit in need who in turn did a runner leaving the Cypriot gentleman to pick up the tab.
