Interesting. I wonder what will become of the mine now. I have to admit, I rather like the idea of it being left as is, because it is a fun place to explore.

Yes, it is good news! The Paphos area has a number of golf courses already. Also they are heavy users of water.. Once Covid is finally brought under control, hopefully we can expect a deluge of tourists, particularly in summer. The hotels are much heavier users of water when they are full. Which puts a strain on the islands finite amount of water in the reservoirs.

Yes the other towns in Cyprus can be supplied with desalinated water, but Paphos hasn't got one as far as I know. Since the previous Mayor of Paphos decided to cancel the contract they had for a temporary desalination plant. Several years ago.

There was one near secret valley but they dismantled it and moved it east as water shortage is more of a problem there.

Actually January is the wettest month by far, traditionally. This year, not withstanding the fact that it is pissing down outside at the moment, there has been very little rain.
Paphos did have a desalination plant. We blogged about it a couple of years ago.
Prior to the last two years of rain, when the reservoirs were exceptionally low, there were plans to build a new plant in Paphos. I hope they stick to those plans. There seems to be a seven year cycle of rain in Cyprus. Every seven years they have a couple of years of decent rain, followed by drier winters. This is only going on the recorded rainfall levels.
By that reckoning, we won't be getting serious winter rain (like the last two winters) for another five years.

I did read that Cyprus was looking at resurrecting some mining activity over the years in an area adjacent to the Limni Mine now the value of raw materials has increased considerably
https://www.chesterfieldresourcesplc.co ... s-targets/
Also worth noting is that whilst the higher grade copper has been stripped away over the years they found that they had used lower grade copper as backfill which may now be worth refining

I did also read that there were some "rare earth" deposits extracted in the Limni area and ignored in the past as it was not known what they could be used for. I think it was Berylium but cant find the article now

Yes, Dominic is right, Cyprus has a well established trend to have a couple of years with exceptional rainfall when the dans overflow, but I also remember some years where we have had drought conditions and there was water rationing. Years when water in the dams got so low that they were talking about not pumping the dams any lower, either because they didn't want to kill the fish that live in some reservoirs, or because the water contains to much
sediment. Thats when the other towns can rely on getting desalinated water. When Paphos has to try to pump water from the aquifers and wells, which we were told were also at a low ebb.

I think at the time of the last drought that water couldn't be take from the dams if the level is below 5%, they were all getting close to that.
I remember driving past minthis hills golf course and one of their little resevoirs was visible from the road, it was totally empty yet the grass was as green as ever, they would probably use the sprinklers at night

Minthis Hills's water shortage improved since, as they are pumping now waste water from more than 7 km away up to the Golf Resort,to be used for watering the greens. This was a large project and lasted more than one year with the difficulty to pump the water up so high.
