Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

I do hope the hotel and the Cprus Government sue both the girl and her parents for defamation and loss of tourism caused by.... Personally I would hope that the Cyprus government would concentrate on addressing some of the problems in the system that this case has highlighted. Let's be clear, prose...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

She's just a liar as proven in court, no more no less, my sympathys are with real rape victims., There you go again. YOU have NO proof. The only ones who know are the ones who were there. She gave two statements to the police regarding the initial encounter with "Sam" which led to the all...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

Simply put, IMHO: she's a money-grabbing..... To be fair I think that is harsh and I don't believe that money was ever the motive. My own opinion on this is that after a good night out - drink/drugs etc - she went back to his room. Events unfolded and whilst initially she was ok with it she then wa...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

Her description of how she believes the rape started, detailed in the Sun, differs from her previous statement to the police and in court which described it as consensual sex - clearly that's not what is being portrayed in the article. At first she gave two statements to the police describing in det...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

From information gleaned over the months since the incident was first reported, she was coerced by the police to retract her initial statement regarding the rape taking place. The court/judge suggests that - what has now been described as the consensual sex part was initially reported as rape by th...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

In fairness to Devil what is being presented is the position of the defense who will no doubt be trying to ensure the best outcome for their client. They will, and rightly so, present the information in the best way they see to get their case across. Clearly there have been mistakes in this case whi...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

If she was drunk and did not, or could not positively consent to sex with the whole group, its rape. The court decreed that nobody has been accused of inflicting rape nor being raped. Judicially, rape never happened, therefore the subject cannot be evoked on appeal. No - as I understand it the cour...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

The sentence she received at the court hearing, even though it is a mild one of 4 mths with a 3 yr suspended sentence (if my memory is correct) is never the less very serious as it will impact her entire life as she intends to go to uni, and with a conviction many fields of prospective careers will...

Re: Not looking good

Some years back on my old forum we had a couple of members who insisted that Saddam Hussein and his bandits were going to throw missiles (Scuds remember those?) at Cyprus, of course they never did and they were both branded trouble makers, both had been removed from Cyprus by the authorities and as...

Re: Government says it will not interfere over rape claim guilty verdict, protests planned

It seems that among some local men rape isn’t deemed to be a serious offence and the law seems to take the same view. I think that's a bit of a stretch. Britain and most of Europe now have half-decent ways of dealing with rape victims, but still not perfect. I would imagine that the vast majority o...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

As suspected more information is coming out - this time from the court/judge and is being reported in full in the Greek language local press but not in the English ones at the moment. It appears to be a statement to address/counter some of the points raised by the British press and is not great read...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

As I understand it anyone in this young girl's situation should under Cypriot/Eu rules have been given access to a solicitor and had the interviews recorded. As this obviously didn't happen I'm not surprised the foreign office has now intervened. No - EU law doesn't require police interviews to be ...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

It also shows the Cyprus Police in a bad light, if a young girl goes to them for help and claims that she was raped and is treated in such an inhumane way by them. Ayia Napa has had a dodgy reputation for years which the Ayia Napa Mayor was trying to get rid of. Dee At the moment the girl is gettin...

Re: Parents of alleged Ayia Napa gang rape victim feel optimistic

It is nice to see that the UK papers and HM Government has taken this up Wouldn't it be nicer if they took up the reasons why in the UK around 98% of rape allegations end with no action being taken by the CPS. It's also rather hypocritical of the UK papers given that they, together with the police,...

Re: operated without a licence last year

And do folks remember a thread on this forum a few months ago where it was claimed that the Government would require all 10,000 AirB'n'B rental properties in Cyprus to be vetted and properly licenced before being permitted to operate? I said at the time this was a complete nonsense and a completely...

Re: operated without a licence last year

As far as I recall the CTO had been asking Parliament to resolve this situation for well over a decade.
Due to some of the issues involved it was agreed not to prosecute those hotels that did not have an
operating license.

Cheers

Re: Eastern site

Thanks for your comments - Devil, Jim & Dominic So basically the latest information that I am getting is that our server crashed - not helpful and unusual as it hadn't needed a reboot in three years but not that much of an issue in normal circumstances. The hosts detected it and tried to restart...
