Re: Shamima Begum: arch villain or unwitting patsy?

It doesn't sway my opinion of her case. I'm totally against stripping people of their citizenship for any reason, except for fraudulent applications in the case of naturalised citizens. It should be a fundamental right, not something to be removed as punishment. Whatever the person has done, the sta...

Re: Top Gun Maverick

I find it quite amusing how so many of you will be critical of shop lifters and burglaries, but feel nothing about watching a film illegally. I'm not talking about TV boxes, where we can at least use the excuse that there is no other option. But Top Gun Maverick is still showing in the cinemas, and...

Re: Top Gun Maverick

It's an old-fashioned film, but in a good way: it features brave people doing challenging stuff against the odds. In contrast to most modern action films (e.g. Marvel), there's an actual sense of threat and it isn't camp or fake-looking. The actors were actually in fighter jets, albeit in the back s...

Re: Paphos set to roll out? 27,000 smart water meters

lets hope the computer system linked to these remote read meters works well. this does bring up the question of why remote read electricity meters , to the best of my knowledge , are not being fitted by the eac despite its 90s technology, maybe its a union thing ! I wonder whether EAC's new meter d...

Is it really said that way? That isn't how it's spelt in Greek. I've always thought 'Latchi' looks and sounds ugly, so I say it the other way. Am I doing it wrong?

I've also received an estimated bill that charged for a meter reading. It was based on last year's usage, when the house was empty, so was 0 kWh. It still came to €7.70 though! I'm steeling myself for a whopper of a bill next time.

Re: Why you should consider moving to Cyprus

It was originally our intention not to return to the UK when we came out to live and work in 2004. [...] Thank you for this. It illustrates why freedom of movement is such a boon for working-age people. Changes in jobs and incomes can make life very unpredictable and when your immigration status is...

Re: Electric scooters in heart of Paphos endanger locals and visitors alike

We really need some new terminology in English to differentiate between electric sit-on scooters (a form of motorbike requiring a driving licence) and stand-on electric scooters (similar in form to the traditional children's toy; sometimes called 'kick scooters'). The former are really popular in Ch...

I find that virtually every restaurant in Cyprus has an excellent rating on Google regardless of the quality of their food or service, including some truly dire places.

Gladstonos is also closed - the uphill road you bear right onto just before Kennedy Square when coming from the harbour. Add Griva Digeni to the mix and driving in Paphos is challenging nowadays!

In such a case the employer will be immediately informed throu...

Jim B wrote: Thu Jul 28, 2022 6:33 pm It's a very dangerous junction due to the island wide lack of use of indicators. I've seen numerous crashes there so it's handy it's local to the General.
Poor road markings are also an issue. If I'm thinking of the right place, there are no painted lines, just some difficult-to-see studs.

Re: Laws regulating use of scooters and bicycles

Plenty of cycle paths on the east end of the island, but rarely see anyone using them for the intended purpose. Indeed, and that's probably why cyclists avoid them. Where I live now there are no cycle paths, but I used to live near some. They were always full of pedestrians (because the pavements h...

Re: Laws regulating use of scooters and bicycles

What benefit does the law on cycle helmets have? Are large numbers of cyclists suffering head injuries? I doubt it, given that there are barely any cyclists in Cyprus the first place. What we actually need are cycle paths and better standards of driving, not measures that will make cycling even less...

We've seen these small outdoor gyms along promenades and in plaza's during our trips to many different destinations in the Med. They're extremely popular. I would much prefer to use outdoor equipment and watch the world go by rather than facing a wall on a running machine in an indoor gym. It also ...

Depressing if true, and there's no telling what might follow politically or even militarily. It's the kind of thing that authoritarian populist politicians do when their popularity ratings drop and the economy crashes. While there are arguments to be had about the 1974 invasion, and there are some o...

Re: Paphos Walkway Tour

I'd love it if the council could expand the walkway all over Paphos. I'd definitely walk more if I didn't have to cross busy roads. And maybe they could add a cycle lane... OK, now I'm definitely dreaming.
