Not everyone is an Expat either....
Are you an expat or an immigrant?
It's an interesting article, long and a bit dated but explains a lot of the furore surrounding the Brexit vote as well.

Re: Ex-pat UK Banks to shut Brit accounts due to EU red tape
Look, if you don't wish to believe it or you cannot be bothered to look for the information, it's no skin off my nose. But only at the beginning of this month an article has gone out that expats in France are the latest round of people to have been notified their accounts will be closed. Some new ar...

Re: Ex-pat UK Banks to shut Brit accounts due to EU red tape
We did too Trev. As I said earlier, friends who returned to UK at the end of 2018 really had to jump through hoops to open a new UK account. It took over 12 months. Things have changed since Brexit, it's all to do with licences regarding financial services inside the EU. There's an article which exp...

Re: Ex-pat UK Banks to shut Brit accounts due to EU red tape
We were lucky in one respect in that the sale of our house in UK wasn't due to complete until some weeks after we arrived in Cyprus in 2004, so it stayed open. Our solicitor did all what was necessary and we transferred most of the funds to our Cypriot bank later in the year. The UK account stayed o...

Re: Ex-pat UK Banks to shut Brit accounts due to EU red tape
Given that most banks are now using a two step verification process either to login to an online bank account, make payments or any kind of transaction where a 6 digit code is sent to your registered mobile number and that must be used within a very short timeframe, anyone overseas who no longer has...

Re: Why you should consider moving to Cyprus
We're billed in arrears as the monthly payment is taken after the bill is calculated based on the readings we provide, so the £120 will no doubt be wiped out. We've refused steadfastly to pay up front ages ago when they started trying to push everyone each month to massively increase their payments,...

Re: Why you should consider moving to Cyprus
Poppy, where did I say we have the heating on. The post was about what we use when we need to use it. Only a couple of weeks ago it was necessary to put the gas fire on in the evening. The gas central heating hasn't been on for several months. Our consumption is down but the monthly bill rarely drop...

Photolady You both work from home, therefore you have an income which is not a pension payment. You have no idea of my life at home or what money comes in, let alone where or how it is earned. It's a life we made a conscious decision on until our government pension kicks in, but that's 2 and 6 year...

Do the petrol stations still do their 2 week closure rotation?
It was always a game of trial and error to find the one which was open on my route home from the office if I used to come back from Limassol and avoiding the highway.

We have a 2 bed semi bungalow. We're with Bulb who are in Special Adminstration, bailed out / being supported by the UK Government due to the amount of households involved. Good idea https://www.bbc.com/news/business-12196322 Copied from the same article, as some people just won't click.... What's happening in other countries? Other countries are also experiencing a cost of living squeeze. The same reasons are often involved - increased energy costs, shortages of good...

Re: Why you should consider moving to Cyprus
It was originally our intention not to return to the UK when we came out to live and work in 2004. I transferred with my UK employer of 10yrs but hated the position and walked out after 4 weeks. So I was out of work. I found another position 3 weeks later which lasted for around 18 months until the ...
