Re: The cheapest supermarkets by district

Lidl are far from the cheapest in many lines.e.g Beef Mince. A lady said "i told you you that they are cheaper look at that beef only 4.60 Paps were 5.50 Pity she did not mention that Lidl was 600 grams Paps a kilo. Meat and veg are no where near the best buys in Lidl. It is best to shop aroun...

Re: Where is this?

@MM: The main road up from the harbour past the Mall. Then there's the left turn to the old Market, and straight on it becomes Gladstonis St, leading up to the Old Town main crossroads.

Trev: Hot tip (or cool tip, however you want to look at it), but there is no need to sit there for 20 mins with the A/C on full blast before setting off! Recommendations from the automotive A/C suppliers since the 50's: Turn recirculation mode OFF (so outside ambient air flows into the vehicle). Ope...

Re: Article about divided Nicosia

I thought the photo of the British soldier handing out food to the displaced Greek Cypriots was particularly emotive. Considering what had been happening between these two sides a decade beforehand... Are they simple loaves of bread that the soldier is dishing out, or a king-size kebab / gyros? AL :)

Re: Where is this?

As you walk up Gladstonis towards the old Town, after the market turn on the left, you reach this staircase on the right. I've climbed it a few times in the past. It's basically a short cut up to the back streets of the Old Town, on the coastal side, as it were. Don't think I'd be able to ascend it ...

I expect food and drinks prices to sky-rocket at the 'new' Riccos Beach kiosk, now that he'll be paying a sizeable lump in rent to Geroskipou municipiality each year...

But there again, he's gotten away with being rent free for 44 years now, so has had a good run!

Max- beautiful photos as always, thanks! But I'm amazed that taking 'full-on' shots of the Solar disc like this doesn't fry rhe internals of your camera! Do you use a special solar filter on the lens when taking such shots? Please tell me that you never look at the solar disc with the naked eye when...

Re: Long-anticipated Paphos marina envisioned to be "the largest in Cyprus"

Polis has always been an enigma in my mind. A fairly large metropolis right on Chrysochou Bay, it seems oblivious to that fact and has it's focus drawn inland. Farm fields go all the way to the coast, one after the other. Okay, there are a couple of (reportably dilapidated) camp sites on its coast, ...

Smashing photos once again, thanks, Dom! One aspect of Chrysochou (and the previous Fasoula blog) villages, is that they seem to be missing essential features which are core to traditional Cypriot villages... A shady central square, with seating, for meeting and chatting. A Coffee Shop. A kiosk mini...

Re: Fridge help

Steptoes might be worth a look, Jim. Also, keep your eyes open for an under counter freezer unit, as this will come in useful for a family. Funnily enough, but I've just given away two such units that were in my garage, but never really used. But there again, I'm in UK not Cyprus. Good luck with you...

Nice one Dom! Hope you and yours had a great holiday! I noticed that in the vineyard opposite you, a rather fast-growing tree has been planted. This now occludes line of sight vision of the two storey new build shell behind it, to your webcam. Was this deliberate, do you think, or just a coincidence...

Yes indeed, Trev.

Friday and Saturday nights used to see a male and female uniformed pair of British Military Police patrolling Bar St, making sure that the squaddies on weekend leave from Episkopi were behaving themselves..

The jail term may seem light. However, it probably means loosing his job. It certainly means loosing a months income with possible consequences on tenancy if he rents. It also means having a criminal record which reduces further employment opportunities and can have other ramifications. Josef- mayb...

It's deeply worrying that this lysteria contamination affects all of Europe, and not just UK (along with certain Tesco frozen veg items sent to Lidl in Cyprus). The culprit has been pinpointed as a large frozen food factory in Hungary. Authorities have been aware of possible lysteria contamination a...
