Fire on B7 between Giolou and Skoulli

At about 16:30 I drove past quite a large wildfire right next to the B7, about halfway between Giolou and Skoulli. Flames were lapping at the road and there was a lot of smoke. I wouldn't be surprised if the road is closed soon.

Re: Cats dying of covid

It's not Covid-19 anyway, it's feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), which also happens to be a caused by a coronavirus. Humans can't catch it. Symptoms are usually not obvious. Treatment is expensive and potentially difficult to deliver, so it's unlikely any strays will be saved. The 300,000 number ...

Re: Cats dying of covid

never, EVER, feed stray cats. You only propagate prolonged misery that the cats do not deserve. As opposed to starving to death? What an idiotic comment. Many and perhaps most of the people who feed strays also get them neutered. They are well aware of the problems and are helping to fix them. But ...

Quads and buggies shouldn't be available to rent. They're a danger to their drivers and a nuisance to everyone else.

Re: ATM's

A lot of the ATMs not owned by local banks will also charge crazy fees. The one in Mesogi near Express Supermarket charges 4 euros per transaction. Or was it 6? Either way, it's a lot.

Re: State employees' salaries

To me, the salaries of top officials are less important than those of the typical public sector worker. There was a report in the CM a while ago which stated that they receive roughly double the salaries of their private sector counterparts, plus 13-month bonuses, total job security and automatic pr...

Re: Beautiful snake looked at me....

Is it just me or are there a lot of snakes around this year? So far, I've already seen six, including a curious (and harmless) worm snake that found its way into the house! Ordinarily I might only see a couple of snakes a year.

Sorry, everyone. I put some washing out earlier, and that's clearly caused a low-pressure system to build up over the island. Happens every time!

Re: Paphos zoo welcomes two white rhinos (videos)

White rhinoceros are endangered as a result of being poached for their horns.
So why move them to a zoo on another continent? If they aren't part of a breeding programme, it's just animal exploitation. Zoos that aren't primarily about conservation need to go.

What are the blossoms near the concentration camp just after you turn off the B7 towards Polemi? Cherry? To my eye, they're far more impressive than the tulips.

Re: Cyprus marks March 25, 1821 anniversary of Greek revolution against Ottoman rule

It may be time to get over it and move on? It was a long time ago ago and the Turks won a later war anyway: ( the 1919-1922 war ). It really has nothing to do with Cyprus except for Greek nationalism, which is antithetical to any future settlement and was in many ways responsible for the division of...

Re: Feral cats again!

The cats cause us no harm but they suffer badly. That's why we should be sterilising as many as possible, something that I personally contribute to financially and practically. I wish people would take action in a humane manner rather than just complain. What would a successful sterilisation plan lo...

Re: Feral cats again!

The animal party of cyprus has stated there are @ 1.5 million cats, more cats then people, what these do gooders who feed them, fail to understand is they are adding to to the problem, spin it how you want, but the problem and it is a problem will have to be addressed at some point, let the feral c...

Re: Feral cats again!

The cats have been here for thousands of years and will probably outlast the human presence on Cyprus. I don't believe in the government's ability or willingness to tackle the problem effectively. I don't get the hatred for cats. The barking dogs disturb me far more. Given that cats have been here f...

Re: Giving your house away?

My understanding is that there is no inheritance tax per se in Cyprus, but there is a 'transfer fee' to be paid to the state of between 4 and 8%, which depends on the deceased's relationship to the beneficiaries. I suppose gifting property would avoid this fee, but there are also fees and taxes invo...

Re: Tougher rules coming for cyclists

Cycle paths in Cyprus are few and far between, and often blocked by parked cars and oblivious pedestrians. They also require you to give way to cars at every junction, while riding on the road doesn't. It's no surprise that few people cycle and that even fewer use the cycle paths! This helmet law wi...

Re: Over fifty per cent reduction in Paphos road fatalities

When figures are as low as this, then pretty much every figure will be a blip. So the term is meaningless in this context. It's not meaningless at all. If a figure is close to the long-term average or fits the long-term trend, then it isn't a blip. A large year-on-year variation like this is likely...
